LDSWBR:  What books do you plan/hope to read this summer?

GALE:  In the Company of Others by Jan Karon, U is for Undertow by Sue Grafton, Biography and Family Record of Lorenzo Snow by Eliza R. Snow Smith

LDSWBR: Did you ever go to summer camp, and/or what is your most memorable camping experience?

GALE:  I did go to summer camp! It was a girl scout camp near Meeks Bay, Lake Tahoe, California. The name of the camp was Camp Wasu and it afforded many wonderful experiences: hiking in the beautiful Sierra mountains, learning how to make camp fires, and singing goofy camp songs which I remember to this day.

LDSWBR:  If you could have a summer home anywhere in the world, where would it be?

GALE:  Lake Tahoe.

LDSWBR:  Thank you, Gale!

Belonging to Heaven

Descended from the Hawaiian royal line, Jonathan Napela became one of the first—and most influential—converts to the Church in Hawaii. A man of intelligence, social status, and wealth, he used his considerable position to further the gospel in his native land. He developed a lifelong bond of brotherhood with Elder George Q. Cannon, helping to translate the Book of Mormon into Hawaiian and establish a gathering place for the Hawaiian saints in Laie, Oahu. But when his beloved wife, Kitty, was stricken with leprosy, Jonathan made the defining decision of his life. He would leave his life of privilege to become her caretaker and spend the rest of his life on Molokai, the island of lepers. To those who suffered similar heartbreak and banishment, Jonathan’s self-sacrifice became their lifeline. Based on true story, this is an extraordinary novel of a man who chose love in the face of death.

Have you ever been to Lake Tahoe or the Sierra Mountains? I’ve never been but I’ve seen pictures and it looks beautiful!

  1. Oh, this book looks so good! I have been to the Sierra Mountains, and they are beautiful. But you have to be careful to make sure that all the roads are open before you plan a trip. Once my friend and I drove the first weekend of June to a high mountain pass road and saw a huge line of cars in front of us. We got out of the car and talked to the other people there to find out that the road was opening that day at noon! If we had gotten there even one day earlier we would have had to go all the way around or wait an extra day

  2. Nope, haven’t been to either. This book looks so amazing – I’ve heard some of the stories about Kalupapa, but I would really love to read this book!

  3. I’ve never been to Lake Tahoe, but I have friends who’ve been there, and they made it sound wonderful. :)

  4. I have been to Lake Tahoe in both the summer and winter and it is a very beautiful area. I can totally understand someone wanting a summer home there. I wouldn’t mind having a second home there (even though it is a bit far to travel to for me). It is a wonderful area to vacation in. :)

  5. I was able to drive through that area once. I think I was about 12 or 13 and I remember that it was beautiful! Love this book!

  6. Having grown up in California, I have been to and over the Sierra Mountains several times. They are gorgeous! Makes me want to do another road trip down that way again!

  7. I really would like to go… It is so beautiful up there :)

  8. I have never been there, but have family that used to live there. I love anywhere that has mountains!

  9. I have been through the Sierras and it is gorgeous! One of my favorite places to stop and visit was a small town just on the edge of the Sierras in California.

  10. I have never been to the Sierra Mountains, but someday we would love to visit that area! Any mountains are a great vacation for our family since we don’t have any where we currently live.

  11. This book is AMAZING!
    It is:
    A story of courage.
    A story of love.
    A story of gospel truths.
A story of belonging to Heaven.

  12. I have never been but would love to see such a beautiful sight.

  13. Yes I’ve been to Lake Tahoe and yes it is that beautiful! Don’ miss out.

  14. I have never been, but I would love to sometime.

  15. My wife’s grandparents lived in a cabin in a remote area of the Sierras. It was AMAZING! We spent a very cozy and happy week there during Thanksgiving sitting by the warm fire and looking at the feet and feet of snow.

  16. I don’t think I’ve been to either place. We traveled a lot when I was little though so I’m not sure.

  17. I have been to Lake Tahoe and it was absolutely beautiful. I went para-sailing and had a blast!! This book looks really interesting and I look forward to adding it to my reading list!

  18. Yes! I live in Northern California. Gorgeous country there.

  19. I grew up in Southern Ca and we had the best family vacation on Lake Tahoe one year. Gorgeous.
