LDSWBR: What book or movie reminds you of summer?

JENNIFER: The first one that comes to mind is the unabridged Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. I know that’s a weird summer book, but I read it the summer after I graduated from high school. Everything we did that summer, I had that book with me. I read it on the beach, I read it driving in the car to family reunions, I read it when I was supposed to be weeding the garden…you get the idea. I’m usually a fast reader, but it took me the majority of the summer to make it through all 1463 pages. That book changed the way I thought about lots of things and I realized that everything is not always black or white, that choices truly have consequences, and that our experiences do shape the way we view the world and everything in it. I think about that at the beginning of every summer.

LDSWBR: Do you hike during the summer? If so, where is your favorite place to hike?

JENNIFER: Yes! Since moving to Boise, we’ve had to search out new places to hike. One of our favorites is to hike Table Rock. It’s a bit steep, but when you get to the top, you can see the entire city of Boise. It’s beautiful! We’ve also done some hiking in McCall this year, and that’s been great.

LDSWBR: What is the best book you’ve read so far this year?

JENNIFER: My favorite book that I’ve read so far this year is Popular by Maya Van Wagenen. It’s a memoir of how Maya, an eighth grade self-proclaimed geek, used a 1950s popularity guide to explore what ‘popular’ really means. It was so touching, and Maya’s experiences are applicable to women of every age. When I finished it, I had my daughter (who will be starting junior high this fall) read it as well. She loved it, too!

LDSWBR: Thank you, Jennifer!

  1. I started to read Les Mesirables, but never got it finished :( I’ve heard it’s amazing!

  2. I haven’t, not sure what the longest single book was that I’ve read, I’ve read way too many!

  3. Haven’t read Les Mis, but I’m guessing my longest would be Anna Karenina?? Gone with the Wind?? Excellent question!

  4. Yes, and it was the longest book I’ve ever read, but it was also one of the best.

  5. I’ve seen two different movies of it, does that count? Some of those Harry Potter books are long. Hee hee.

  6. I have not read the long version though I have it. Probably one of the longest books I have resd is the work and the glory series that I will consider one book because I read them all in a week

  7. I haven’t read that, although I have read Gone With the Wind (over 1000 pages). I’m excited to read Discovering Peace!

  8. I think the book Popular sounds worth reading, since I will have teenagers someday. :)

  9. I’ve heard that it is a fabulous book, but I have yet to read it. I think the longest book I’ve ever read was Holly Claus. It still is my favorite book!

  10. I really liked Jennifer Holt’s first book and thought it was very well written. I can’t wait to read this one as well :)
I probably need to re-read “Les Miserables”. I think I read an abridged version, but I can’t really remember since it has been so long. I did read “The Count of Monte Cristo” unabridged and abridged and it was very long, but very good.

  11. I have never read Les Mis. I need to. I think the longest book I’ve read would probably have to be by James Michener, either Poland or Mexico.

  12. I have not read Les Miserables but I did read the unabridged version of The Count of Monte
    Cristo which I really enjoyed!

  13. I have not read Les Miserables, but one day I will. This book sounds like something I will definitely pick up and read. Thanks for letting me know about it!
