LDSWBR:  What books do you plan/hope to read this summer?

SARAH:  “How to Sell Unruly Children to the Circus” and the best-selling sequel “So You Sold Your Kids to the Circus, But the Circus Sent Them Back.” I have a love/hate relationship with summer break. I love being able to do fun things with my kids, to bond with them over road trips and summer reading programs, to sleep in a little, and not have homework deadlines to meet. But I hate the inevitable summer cycle of “I’m Bored”/“I Take Delight in Tormenting my Sibling”/“Hi, Mom! You and I Will Never Leave Each Other’s Side All Summer. Not Even So You Can Go to the Grocery Store. I’ll Even Slide Notes Under the Bathroom Door So You Won’t Miss Me Even Then!” It’s the best of times, it’s the worst of times. . .

LDSWBR:  Did you ever go to summer camp, and/or what is your most memorable camping experience?

SARAH:  When I was fourteen, I attended a summer camp for the other teenage girls at my church. We had a class at that camp all about using axes and hatchets. I had something of a reputation at that time for being excruciatingly accident prone. Excruciatingly. So much so, in fact, that when it came time for me to demonstrate what I’d learned in the class, the teacher turned to me and said, “Now, if we were to give you an ax or a hatchet, how would you use it.” And then I was required to mime my newfound ax and hatchet skills. They were so convinced I would slice myself open, I wasn’t even allowed to touch the handle of an ax or hatchet.

So, having survived the most dangerous of the camp classes, I skipped on over to the lashing class ready to learn wonderful things about tying knots. I have a feeling the camp leaders breathed a sigh of relief. Ropes, after all, weren’t sharp like axes. I’d left something over at the hatchet class, so I decided to just run on over and get it. In true “Sarah Style” I misjudged my proximity to a two-foot long piece of metal acting as a stake holding down the canopy the lashing class was held under and caught the front of my knee on the sharp, jagged edge of the rebar. Not to worry, though, the metal edge didn’t stay caught, it came back out. At the back of my knee.

I have a thick, ugly, long scar along the side of my knee that has, on more than one occasion, inspired people to ask if I’ve had some kind of reconstructive surgery or knee replacement. It’s nasty enough looking that it should have a super fantastic story behind it. But, no. All I can say in that regard is I ripped my leg open at a class on knot-tying. *sigh*

LDSWBR:  If you could have a summer home anywhere in the world, where would it be?

SARAH:  Ireland. Just outside either Donegal Town or Killarney National Forest. Donegal because it’s a sweet, sleepy little coastal town with just the right mix of accessibility and isolation, and the picturesque beauty one expects from the Irish Countryside. Killarney National Forest because it is amazingly beautiful, directly at the start of the Ring of Kerry (probably the most stunning part of Ireland I visited while I was there), and yet is near enough to Dublin to make regular trips to that fantastic old city.

LDSWBR:  Oh, Sarah, Sarah, Sarah…You have the best stories to tell, though they are usually somewhat tragic in nature. Most times I am both laughing and battling guilt at finding entertainment through your suffering. Thank you for sharing your stories with us!

In possession of a forged letter of recommendation and cloaked in the anonymity of her new identity, she enters a life of self-imposed servitude as teacher and caretaker of young Miss Caroline Jonquil of the Meadows. With her characteristic sunny disposition, Marion casts her spell upon the household and slowly brings to life the longforgotten joy of those within. Layton Jonquil is a man tormented by the lies surrounding the death of his late wife, but he cannot deny his growing attraction for the beautiful governess whose goodness and optimism have touched his dormant heart. Their connection grows ever stronger, and despite the impropriety of harboring feelings for a servant, Layton’s heart whispers that this is the woman he’s destined to love. But when Layton’s fears about the past become too much to bear and the falsehoods in which they are entangled threaten to shatter Marion’s and his blossoming attachment, will true love conquer all?

  1. love Love LOVE Sarah’s books. Can’t wait to get this one.

  2. Sarah’s camping story sounds pretty painful… All that I’ve ever done is get my ankle sprained a couple times… Even then, it was pretty painful

  3. Oy vey! No, I cannot top that story. I did however, have the cramps on the way up to girls camp one year. Having said that, I never “just” got the cramps. They would always be accompanied by extreme stomach problems and passing out. So, we happened to stop at a Ranger Station to get our camping permits and I headed to the only restroom in the building which I proceeded to occupy for the next half hour, at least. I finally felt well enough to leave the safety of the restroom, but spent the whole first day curled up on the front seat of my camp leader’s car.

  4. Nope, can’t top Sarah’s story. Definitely want to read Glimmer of Hope!

  5. Egads! That is a painful camping story! I cringed when I read it! I am not going to even try to top that story – though I have gotten some pretty bad mosquito bites when I went camping!

    This book sounds fabulous!

  6. Ouch! I’m so glad my camping experiences have just been miserable-not painful!

I love Sarah’s books. Just started Glimmer of Hope last night and it is SO GOOD! I would have stayed up to finish it, but I was exhausted from a stressful day. Can’t wait to get back to it today!

  7. I’m so excited to read Glimmer of Hope. With a new Sarah M Eden book, my summer will be complete!

  8. I love Sarah Eden’s books. I can wait to read this new one.

  9. I have never read any of her books but they all sound great!

I have never been injured camping, but have had an “Indian Jones” experience when our overnighter hike became rained out and the tiny stream the day before turned into a huge raging river that we had to cross. The only way we found to cross it was on a log about 50 feet above the river. I was the last one to go because I was so scared I would fall off, and at the end pushed the adult helping us get up the slippery rocks into the river! He made it out safely, but I was so embarrassed!

  10. Thank goodness I cannot top Sarah’s camp injury. :) I am excited to read her new book, though!

  11. I LOVE Sara’s books! I have no camping stories that would even begin to compare with that one. :)

  12. I met Sarah when she was MC for a writer’s conference in 2012. Afterwards, I read everything by her I could get my hands on, and I’ve loved every one of them! I really liked the stories the governess would tell her young charge in Drops of Gold, stories with a deeper meaning that were tied to the past. I highly recommend all of Sarah’s books to those who are unfamiliar with them, and I can’t wait to read Glimmer of Hope!

  13. I love Sarah’s books and she never fails to make me smile. What a camping story! I should feel bad for laughing at what was probably a very traumatic experience.

  14. I love love love Sarah’s books, and am very excited to see there is another one! Nope, can’t top her camping story (ha!), but will definitely have to get her book!

  15. Sarah is one of my favorite authors. I’m a sucker for a sweet romance with a sense of humor.

  16. Nah, the worst thing that comes to mind off the top of my head is throwing up after my first day on the job in wilderness therapy because I’d never backpacked before and want used to the work it was.

  17. Sarah’s books are amazing. I am so excited for Glimmer of Hope. She’s a great storyteller.

  18. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Sarah Eden!
She writes with such a passion that you can feel the emotions of the characters that help you fall in love with each and every one of them.

Her stories often involve a man and a woman~
The man always believes one way and the woman always believes another way and in the end they find out they were both wrong.

But that is what makes the book so right…And so good!

  19. Mine is not as bad but I do have one to tell. While setting up camp for the evening I had taken my shoes off in the tent while I was getting the bed made. My husband had placed all of his fishing gear in the tent and I had no idea that he had done so. I tripped on the bed sheets and my foot caught my fall. Well my foot had landed on my husbands bag full of barbed fish hooks. I had a fish hook stuck in my toe! So I freaked out for a few minutes and calmed down enough for my friends and husband to pul the fish hook out of my toe.

  20. Ouch no. I’m pretty accident prone but nothing ever that bad. ewww. I did manage to staple my thumb the other day however. whoops

  21. I don’t have any camping stories. I only went to girls camp until I was 15, and I just barely went for the first time last month.
Sarah Eden is my favorite author. I LOVE HER BOOKS!!! Sarah, keep it up!!!

  22. I have not had that experience with camping, but it’s probably only a matter of time. So it’s best for me to stay away.

  23. Absolutely loved Drops of Gold and can’t wait to read Glimmer of Hope!

  24. That is a fantastic story! I mean at the time it probably wasn’t that fantastic but what a memory. I don’t have anything that big but whenever my family went camping it would inevitably rain or snow ( even at the Grand Canyon in summer) so shenanigans would ensue because of the precipitation that seemed to follow us around. I love Sarah M. Eden!! And I just found out that her father is in my Stake Presidency (my most memorable temple recommend interview :-) )

  25. Nope, I can’t top that story. *Shudder*. Although at girl’s camp one year we got stuck on a mountain we were hiking in the middle of the night during a rain storm. I didn’t realize the danger we were in until the rescue team showed up.
