LDSWBR:  What books do you plan/hope to read this summer?

JENNIFFER:  I’m planning on re-reading all of Rick Riordan’s “Percy Jackson” and “House of Olympus” books in preparation for his newest novel, “House of Hades.” It isn’t coming out until October, but with eight sizeable books to get through I should probably get started now. I’d also like to try some of Terry Pratchett’s non-Discworld books, particularly “Dodger.”

LDSWBR: Did you ever go to summer camp, and/or what is your most memorable camping experience?

JENNIFFER:  I went to girls’ camp with the other Young Women, but my most memorable camping experience was with my family. We were spending a week at a campsite in Yellowstone, but I didn’t realize until we got there that I’d left everything I’d packed back in Utah. I spent the week sharing clothes with my mother, the only other girl in the family.

LDSWBR:  If you could have a summer home anywhere in the world, where would it be?

JENNIFFER:  Orlando, Florida. People who can claim in-state residency get discount passes to most of the theme parks, which means you can go to Sea World and Universal Studios the same way most people go to the local playground. The beach is close enough you can spend your Saturdays by the water, and the people are generally very friendly and accepting.

LDSWBR:  Thank you so much, Jenniffer!

Fairy Godmothers, Inc.

In a world where fairy tale situations are as much a fact of life as death and taxes, everyone knows hiring Fairy Godmothers, Inc. is the best way to assure that your beautiful daughter or enchanted frog of a grandson will get the happily-ever-after he or she deserves. Sure, sometimes a little love potion is required to make sure those quotas stay up, but what Prince Charming doesn’t know won’t hurt him.

Kate, an experienced Fairy Godmother, who’s enough of a romantic to frustrate her rigidly rule-bound boss, has just received a specialty assignment from one of the company’s board of directors. Cinderella—Rellie for short—was placed with an appropriately wicked stepfamily years before, and now needs the dress, ball, and handsome prince to complete her happily-ever-after. The fact that Rellie isn’t sure this is her dream come true—balls are fun, but princes tend to be less interesting than fluffy bunnies—isn’t something management considers a problem.

Complicating things a bit is Jon, the youngest son of the royal family, who meets Kate, and is smitten, but isn’t quite ready yet to reveal his true identity. After all, it’s his older brother Rupert who’s supposed to marry Rellie, which means pretending to be a lowly civil servant will give him the chance to spend more time with Kate. (As long as he can get the ball arranged, and stop Rupert from getting himself into trouble over his “self-actualization” business, he should have the perfect opportunity to explain everything and get started on making a little magic with the Fairy Godmother of his dreams.)

But, of course, things never ever happen as planned.

  1. I once forgot my razor, and my friend forgot to bring flip-flops for the shower, so we’d just do a quick switcheroo whenever we went ot shower!

  2. When I was 18 I was asked to be our ward camp director. Luckily I only had 5 girls that went. It was funny though because whenever the stake leaders would come through our campsite they would see me with the girls and ask where our leader was. They were always surprised when I would raise my hand. I did a pretty good job shopping for all of our food and supplies for the week, and the only thing that I forgot was a can opener. Luckily the other wards had one that we could use.

  3. I know I have frequently left behind important items that I meant to pack, but they must be really painful experiences that I am blocking out of my consciousness because I am having a hard time remembering any. :) I do remember forgetting my Sunday shoes while vacationing with my family when I was young. I had to wear dirty tennis shoes with my dress to church and it was very embarrassing.

  4. While camping on the same trip I told about in an earlier post I forgot to pack a vital part of our tent—the posts! So we had a saggy tent (tied between two trees) that collapsed on us as it rained harder and harder throughout the night.
I have heard about this book from several bloggers and am very excited to read it.

  5. I probably have a really good “forgot to pack” story, but it’s not coming to me. I do remember forgetting to pack underwear on a trip once. Luckily it wasn’t a camping trip or anywhere remote, so I was able to buy more without a problem.

  6. On the last trip we took I forgot to pack my contact lens case. By the time we got to the hotel it was after midnight. I’m putting my contacts into the glasses left in the room with solution in the bottom and remembering the scene in one of Jack Weyland’s old books where the male lead drinks the girls contacts on their honeymoon and thinking how lucky I was that I did remember to bring a second pair!

  7. I don’t know if I have traveled or packed enough to have a good “I forgot to pack” story. Or maybe I have just blocked them all out of my mind :) !! There have been plenty of day outings with my kids, though, where I have forgotten to pack enough snacks, diapers, wipes, etc.

  8. This sounds like my kind of book! I love cutesy fairy-tale-mixed-with-real-life books. I’ll definitely be seeking out this one. Thank you!

  9. Sounds cute! I love books with fairy tale themes.

  10. I don’t remember any major things that I’ve forgotten, but I’m pretty good about remembering my toothbrush and pjs because when I was a kid and would go on sleepovers, I would nearly always forget them. :-)

  11. My worst experience of forgetting something was when I went to camp and forgot to bring my deodorant! What was wore though, was that the camp I went to was both for girls AND boys! I was SUPER embarrassed!

  12. I forgot to pack my makeup once. Spent the whole trip borrowing makeup from my mom!

  13. My best forgot to pack story deals with my son age 18 months and my daughter at 4 months. We were traveling on our yearly hunting trip and this area that we camp in is about 30 mile out of any town and any civilization. So we show up the campsite, unpack and notice that we have no diapers for our 2 kids!!!! Well that was at 10pm and we had a 30 minute drive back to civilization to buy the weekends worth of diapers. Oh the fun times :)

  14. Yes I have one of those stories. I forgot my makeup bag on our honeymoon. I look like I’m12 years old in all of our pictures.

  15. Underwear!! That’s right, I went camping and forgot to bring extra underwear. Just awful!!

  16. This is fairly recent–two weeks ago, we went on a church camp and whitewater rafting trip but went to the temple first. We had one boy who didn’t bring anything except what he wore to the temple.

  17. I’ve forgotten to pack underwear before. Not fun!

  18. I always had a fear that I would need an outfit for every occasion (i.e. all black should I need to become a ninja, dressy for those inevitable balls, etc) so it was more of a ” why did I pack this ?” as opposed to a ” Dang it, I forgot to pack…!” Nowadays though it is down to a science. I saw this book the other day and am so excited that it is on your list!

  19. Going on a camping trip with my family when I was a kid. I was the only one who brought a towel. It was quickly confiscated for parental and brotherly uses. Thankfully, my parents made a quick stop the next day and got some more towels so we didn’t all have to share mine.
