8 days until Christmas

JodyDurfeeJody Wind Durfee often hikes the craggy mountains outside her front door where she lives with her husband, children and three red hens. She’s been known to randomly break into song and has a deep, abiding love for chocolate chip cookies. One of her favorite things to do is coach her friends in Special Olympics and is thankful everyday for the amazing people in her life.

LDSWBR: What is your favorite Christmas song/hymn? Does it have special meaning to you?

JODY: My favorite Christmas song is the classic, Silent Night. It’s the first Christmas song I remember my grandmother singing to me as a child–she had a beautiful soprano voice––and no matter where or when it’s sung, usually everybody sings at least part of it together and then I’m always moved.

LDSWBR: Do you get together with friends/family to play board games on Christmas or New Year’s? What games do you like to play? Do you have a favorite game from your childhood?

JODY: I do play board games with my family, usually later on Christmas Day and for New Years. Our favorites are Scrabble, Settlers of Cataan, Parchesi, Clue, and, not technically a board game, Telestrations. I loved the game Clue as a child. I felt so very smart when I won.

LDSWBR: If you could recommend only one book from those you read this year, what would it be and why?

JODY: Only one? Sheesh. Then I guess it would have to be Jane Eyre. I read it every year, it covers nearly every classic genre and is filled with everything great about literature.

LDSWBR: Thank you, Jody!

HadleyHadleyBenson

When Maddi Benson moves in next door to Jaxon Quayle, neither of them knows how much life is about to change. Jaxon knows he should date only girls who share his faith, but as he gets to know Maddi he wants his new neighbor to be more than a friend. To make things even more complicated, there’s Maddi’s twin brother Hadley (or Hadley-Hadley, as he calls himself), who has special needs and always seems to be hanging around, and Jaxon’s pal Tanner, who feels more than a little left out. Jaxon feels hopeful when the Bensons begin to consider joining the Church, which would solve at least one of his problems. But just when things seem to be working out, a horrible prank seems to make everything fall apart, leaving Maddi and Jaxon caught in the middle of doubt and faith, hurt and forgiveness, friendship and love.

What book do you read every year? If not every year, what book have you read several times?

  1. Wow! I haven’t read Jane Eyre in a long time. I’ll add that to my list of “must read soons.” :)

  2. I’ve only reread one book, The Giver. I read it when I wad a kid and then again last year. I suite picked up on a lot more as an adult as to what was really going on.

  3. I love the books by John D. Fitzgerald. They make me laugh and cry at the same time. Such a talented author!

  4. I’ve read Pride and Prejudice many, many times. Also Jane Eyre.

  5. I re-read Silas Marner nearly every year at New Year’s. It’s a lovely book for considering the possibility of change.

  6. Definitely Pride and Prejudice!!!

  7. I LOVED Hadley-Hadley Benson!

I try so hard to keep up on what is “new” for my blog that I don’t take time to re-read something I have already read :)

In case anyone wants to know…I blog at ilovetoreadandreviewbooks.blogspot.com

  8. I know it’s silly, but I have read The Firm by John Grisham about 15 times, just about once a year. It’s an infinitely enjoyable read.

  9. I read the Book of Mormon at least once a year. The other book that I have reread the most is The Host by Stephenie Meyer. I can’t even count how many times I’ve read it, and I still cry in the same place every time. I even cried in the same place in the movie! :o)

  10. Anne of green gables…the whole series. Of course, the yearly aspect has petered out a bit since I’ve had kids, but it’s still a go-to favorite.

  11. When I was younger, I would read “Pride and Prejudice” yearly. Now it is just a favorite to revisit every few years or so. Jane Austen was brilliant. Edenbrooke is another favorite that I have read multiple times. And most books by Traci Hunter Abramson and Betsy Brannon Green.

  12. I have so many new books on my list to read, that I never take the time to re-read any of my favorites, though I wish I could! Although I have been known to pull them out from time to time and just re-read my favorite parts.

  13. Wow tough question. I read quite a few books over and over in a year. Some of my favorites are: pride and prejudice, Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Midnight in Austenland, etc… I love books!! And I love this site because it gives me great book suggestions for both myself and my friends. Thanks you!

  14. I don’t think that I have ever read a book more than once besides church books and reference books. I just have so many books I want to read that I can’t justify going back to the same one.

I think this book looks great. I work at a school that mainstreams kids with special needs into the regular ed classrooms for half the day and I love to see how my students interact with them.

  15. I read every year “The Night Before Christmas” and “I’ll Be Home for Christmas”. I read these books to my kids when they were growing up. Now I read to the Grandkids when I get the chance. If the kids aren’t around I read them for myself.

  16. Oh, that’s a good question! I’m not sure if I read one book every year, but I have read Little Women many times over the years. I have a special set of Louisa May Alcott’s books that my Great Grandmother gave my Grandmother, and then she passed on to my mother, and finally me. They are over 100 years old, and I treasure them a lot.

  17. Oh – I usually read Fire of the Covenant by Gerald Lund at least once a year (along with a lot of his other books, too.) And I read Melanie Jacobson’s books over again, at least once a year, too!

  18. Such a hard question! Pride and prejudice, Anne of green gables, austenland, Harry potter series…I could go on and on! I love to reread books, and read them to my kids too!

  19. I’ve read Jane Eyre several times. Love that book!
    Thanks for the fun giveaway!

  20. I’ve read Santa Maybe by Aubrey Mace every single Christmas since it came out. Five times now?? Something like that.

  21. Pride and prejudice
