LDSWBR: What book or movie reminds you of summer?
SARAH: The book that, to me, just screams summer, is The Glass Unicorn, a literary masterpiece in unfinished form by a 12-year-old, as-yet-unknown author. This young writer in the rough wrote her bit of genius under extreme duress as part of a mandatory summer activity designed by her mother to keep a house full of bored children from climbing the walls. In this book’s pages (all 4 of them) we find intrigue, angsty pre-teen drama, highly derivative paranormal elements, and the vaguest hint of a storyline. One can almost sense that the author knew she was in the wrong genre and would grow up to one day write, not middle grade urban fantasy, but Romance with lots of romancey-ness and a limited amount of magical knick-knackery.
LDSWBR: Do you hike during the summer? If so, where is your favorite place to hike?
SARAH: I think my favorite hike right now involves the five stairs required to get out of my house. On good days, I can make that grueling hike on my feet. On not so good days, I make the journey on my backside. On super bad days, I stand at my door and gaze longingly at the world beyond knowing I’m stuck because there is no way out of my house that doesn’t involve stairs. Perhaps someday I’ll conquer the “Hike of the Twelve Stairs Going to My Basement,” but let’s not get crazy!
LDSWBR: What is the best book you’ve read so far this year?
SARAH: It’s always so hard to pick a “favorite.” But I will say, I just recently finished Before the Clock Strikes Thirty by Aubrey Mace and thought is was absolutely lovely. Such a fun and enjoyable read!
LDSWBR: Thank you, Sarah! (UPDATE- For those of you who might be concerned by my asking Sarah about hiking considering her RA diagnosis: I create the interview questions and author invitation email well ahead of considering which authors to ask to participate in the Countdown then send the same interview email to every author. Unfortunately, I didn’t make the connection with the hiking question in regard to Sarah beforehand. Sarah assured me that the question wasn’t at all offensive to her, that our friendship is such that she knows that I would never purposefully ask an inconsiderate question, and she answered it with her usual good humor. As someone whose mother suffered with RA for several years, I am aware of the struggles and pain that RA causes. There was no malice intended by including this question in the author interviews.)

A horse breeder by trade, Corbin Jonquil is more at home in the stables than in the ballroom of his sprawling estate. Corbin is the quietest of the Jonquil brothers and has always faded into the background, contentedly unnoticed. When a mysterious young widow, Mrs. Clara Bentford, moves into the neighborhood, however, Corbin quickly comes to realize that being noticed has its advantages. But how to catch the eye of the lady? According to his brothers, Corbin need only make a few simple changes to transform himself into the object of any woman’s desire—dubious advice, indeed. Following a series of misadventures, Corbin and Clara slowly lower the facades behind which they’ve been hiding, leaving Corbin shocked by the horrors that haunt the woman he’s coming to care for so ardently. When the menace of Clara’s past threatens to tear them apart and tensions mount, will the couple have the courage to fight for the promise of forever?

Katie Macauley gave up her lifelong dream of returning to Ireland in order to make a home for herself in Hope Springs, Wyoming, but her future has never been so uncertain.
Katie’s heart still remains sharply divided between playful Tavish and steady Joseph, though she feels ill-prepared to make a decision. Furthermore, the town is more divided than ever with both the Irish and the Reds stealing property, burning buildings, and endangering lives. In the midst of the growing unrest, temperatures drop quickly, too quickly, and Irish nightmares of famine and cold resurface as the little Wyoming town struggles to beat the harsh winter.
Katie makes one sacrifice after another to keep the peace and help see her loved ones through the difficult days ahead, but will her efforts be enough? Can the town make amends before their hatred consumes them all? And will Katie find the love she has been searching for as well as a home to call her own?
I still have stories I wrote in junior high and high school, though I shudder at the thought of reading them now. Did you write stories when you were growing up? If so, do you still have them?

I love Sarah Eden’s books! And I love reading her answers to these questions…especially about all those stairs. Sounds look a premise for a book right there! ;-)
I love good clean romance books and Sarah Eden’s are among my favorites!
I only discovered Sarah Eden about a year ago and since then I’ve purchased and enjoyed all of her books. She is a gifted writer who really brings her characters to life. I enjoy historical romance and it’s a pleasure to know I don’t have to worry about any offensive content.
I love Sarah Eden’s books! They are some of my favorite!
I absolutely love Sarah Eden novels! They are beautifully written novels full of adventure and clean romance. Once started, I always have a hard time putting her novels down until they are finished.
I just recently discovered Sarah Eden’s writing, and I can’t wait to read more!
Oh!! I love all of Sarah’s books. Anxiously awaiting any new ones. :)
I shuddered so badly that in high school I threw away my elementary school to junior high journal! I wish I could go back in time and stop myself. LOVE Sarah’s books!!
I have read several of Sarah’s books and love them. I was intrigued by the comment she made on Facebook yesterday about her forthcoming book containing a lot of kissing. Sounds delightful. Keep writing Sarah. We need your clean, lovely stories.
I love Sarah Eden’s books! She has such strong character development. She’s one of those authors that I know I can’t go wrong with when buying a book.
My kids are right with Sarah Eden on the hiking issue. :). We just came back from vacation and the kids unanimously agree the worst part of vacation was having to walk everywhere.
I wrote lots of stories when I was young, I kept several of them. It’s pretty entertaining/embarrassing to look back on.
Sarah Eden is my favorite author! I love seeing her sense of humor in interviews like this :)
I love Sarah Eden’s books and can’t wait to read her next one. I also appreciate her sharing her struggles with arthritis and find it inspiring to see both her serious and humorous comments about it; her positive attitude with her challenges helps me try to stay positive with mine.
As for stories I wrote when I was growing up…I think they’re in a box in my mother’s house, because the last time I read through them I totally cringed but couldn’t quite make myself throw them away. Maybe someday I’ll be brave enough to pull them out and see if there are any salvageable bits of ideas there, even if the stories themselves aren’t anything I want to share with anyone.
I wrote some when I was younger, I don’t have them. I do still have the stories I wrote for a college creative writing class though.
I am a little disappointed in you. You obviously did not do your homework before interviewing this amazing author. To ask someone who is suffering from RA if she likes to hike is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Maybe next time you should actually read about the author before asking something that ridiculous.
Erin,
You are absolutely right. I come up with these questions well ahead of deciding which authors to included in the countdown, but as a good friend of Sarah’s, I should have made the connection. I didn’t, however, and have apologized to Sarah. And I apologize for disappointing you as well. Thank you for pointing out my mistake so I could do my best to make it better.
Sincerely-
Shanda
Love, love Sarah’s books! I did not really write stories when I was younger, just a few poems here and there.
I love Sarah ‘ s books. Was hooked after the first one that I read. Look forward to many more.
Sarah Eden is one of my most favorite authors.
I did write as a child, and I probably still have my writing, tucked away in a box somewhere. LOVE Sarah M Eden’s books!
I was never much of a writer, so the only papers that I kept from junior high or high school, were the “big” papers/projects and most of those were non-fiction. So no original stories written in my past. Sorry.
But I really enjoy Sarah’s writing and I admire her as a person. I look forward to each book that she publishes!
I have a story I wrote when I was about ten. We wrote the stories in school and illustrated them ourselves, and then the teacher bound them with comb bindings. I think that it is in a book form is why it managed to stay away from the trash. :-)
I love everything Sarah writes. Her sensitivity and attention to detail make her books a rare treasure. Her strength and resilience are inspiring.
I DID write stories when I was younger. They are terrible… They really are. I enjoyed writing them, and if inspiration strikes, I’ll write a little something :) I love Sarah M. Eden’s books and am really excited to continue reading her new books!
I loved Sarah’s answers. From each post, it’s obvious that these are the same questions you ask every author.
To answer your question, I wrote a paper in high school and kept it because my teacher was surprised that I wrote a paper in the first place, and that I did so well on it. (I guess I didn’t do much in my english class. haha) Then, I wrote a paper in college and had a TA accuse me of plagiarism. Even though I showed him all of my footnotes and sources, he said he wouldn’t be surprised if he found my paper in some type of publication. I guess it was good, and wish I would have kept it, but that was in the days of typewriters and pens. He had my only copy.
Oh, I did keep some cute things I wrote in elementary school.
I wrote a few poems and short stories. The ones that were printed into a school booklet were kept.
I love Sarah Eden’s books and wish I could write like her, but unfortunately I don’t feel that is one of my talents :)
I never tried to write anything great in High School, but I do have some of my essays and a “Horse Magazine” I worked on with a friend. It is fun to read through the articles we wrote for that assignment.
