LDSWBR: What is your favorite Christmas song/hymn? Does it have special meaning to you?

BRADEN: “Oh Holy Night.” I have ended up performing this song at different stages and points in my life, each of which had a great deal of meaning. It’s rewarding to sing, and the line, “Chains shall he break, for the slave is our brother” is a beautiful distillation of Christ’s mission and the charge he gives his disciples.

LDSWBR: Do you get together with friends/family to play board games on Christmas or New Year’s? What games do you like to play? Do you have a favorite game from your childhood?

BRADEN: We used to play Monopoly on Christmas Eve. It helped pass the seemingly endless hours. One year, my grandparents came and stayed with us and we played “Pit.” That’s not my favorite game, but those memories are so warm and I cherish them so much that the game makes me happy anytime I see it.

LDSWBR: If you could recommend only one book from those you read this year, what would it be and why?

BRADEN: Oh goodness, I am so bad at these questions! I should probably say The Bible or The Book of Mormon and leave it at that. However, the book that left the biggest impact on me was “The Reluctant Blogger.” I stayed up all night to read it, laughing and crying so hard that I shook the bed and woke my poor wife up several times. It challenged me, entertained me, and made me think and the characters seemed so real to me. Another very compelling read was “Wall of Faith” by Jason Lloyd Morgan. Okay, I need to stop now!

LDSWBR: Thanks, Braden!

As a Mom to six kids, it isn’t always easy to find time to write, but Jenny squeezes it in in the early hours of the morning, and long after she should have gone to bed. LDSWBR: What is your favorite Christmas song/hymn? Does it have special meaning to you?

JENNY: My favorite Christmas Hymn: I don’t think I could pick just one! I love Far Far Away on Judea’s Plains, because it’s fun to play, and fun to sing. I also really love O Come, All ye Faithful. There’s a song called Welcome to Our World that’s really beautiful, and I love Joseph’s Song, I was Not His Father, from The Forgotten Carols. The meaning behind that song has always been really special to me because it makes me think of the people that knew the Savior not just as Jesus, the Son of God, but as a friend, a son, a neighbor . . . those that lived among Him, and cherished the personal relationships they had with Him.

LDSWBR: Do you get together with friends/family to play board games on Christmas or New Year’s? What games do you like to play? Do you have a favorite game from your childhood?

JENNY: We love to play games at my house, though we’ve never played games on Christmas Eve, or New Years. We’ve been traveling in years past, but this year we’ll be home so playing games on Christmas Eve sounds so fun! We like to play Scrabble and Qwirkle, and Uno. And with the big kids, Ticket to Ride is really fun. I LOVED the game Enchanted Forest when I was a kid, so I bought it for my kids thinking we would have so much fun playing together. What I didn’t remember about my childhood is how LONG the game takes to play. SO yeah. My feelings about that one have changed now that I’ve crossed over to the parent side of game playing.

LDSWBR: If you could recommend only one book from those you read this year, what would it be and why?

JENNY: Only one book? That’s painful. I’m going to cheat and give you a couple different categories. If you have kids, The One and Only Ivan is a beautiful juvenile fiction book that parents and kids should read together. You’ll cry. Your kids will love it. It’s one of my all-time favorites. If you want a beautiful, heartfelt novel, Ka Hancock’s Dancing on Broken Glass is another one I’ll remember forever and reread over and over again. And finally, if you want a simple story with incredible prose, Andrew Sean Greer’s The Story of a Marriage is a lovely read. Multiple times, I felt the need to wake up my husband and read him passages out loud. So, so good.

LDSWBR: Thank you, Jenny!

LDSWBR: What is your favorite Christmas song/hymn? Does it have special meaning to you?

JOSI: O Holy Night is my favorite Christmas song, it just captures what I want Christmas to be but which I struggle to truly hold on to. I love it, though.

LDSWBR: Do you get together with friends/family to play board games on Christmas or New Year’s? What games do you like to play? Do you have a favorite game from your childhood?

JOSI: I’m not a big game player, other than the mind games I play to try and get my kids to clean their rooms :-) Our family does enjoy Settlers of Catan and Apples to Apples, or I should say those are the ones I like. I’d rather watch movies when it comes right down to it.

LDSWBR: If you could recommend only one book from those you read this year, what would it be and why?

JOSI: “Three Little Words” by Ashley Rhodes-Courter. It’s an autobiography of a girl who got lost in the foster care system of Florida in the 80’s. My husband and I read it as part of our training to become Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for children involved in DCFS cases. The book is a symbol of this new opportunity my husband and I are embarking upon but was both shocking, informative, and inspiring. It’s the most powerful thing I read this year.

LDSWBR: Thank you, Josi!

THE ST. GEORGE SPECTRUM
Dr. Trenton Hendricks was last seen Friday, April 8, when he set out alone on a backpacking trip. Hendricks’s Jeep Grand Cherokee was located Tuesday at the Chuckwalla Trailhead, but after six days and thousands of man-hours, the official search has been called off. He is presumed to be deceased.

It was supposed to be a girls’ weekend in scenic St. George, Utah, that would included shopping, trying out the local cuisine, and participating in a breast cancer fund-raiser. The fact that one of the organizers of the fund-raising event, a local doctor, had disappeared two months before was not supposed to be Sadie’s problem.

When Sadie learns that her friend Caro and Caro’s cousin, Tess, have started a grassroots investigation into Dr. Hendrick’s disappearance, Sadie graciously refuses to be a part of it. With her wedding to plan and her most recent case still fresh in her mind, Sadie is determined to leave this case to the police—until she meets the ex-wife of the missing man.

How could she not ask a few questions … that lead to more questions … that lead to a small town and even more questions? When the local police ask her to be their eyes and ears, Sadie can’t help but jump in with both feet. Before she knows it, she is on the rocky road of another investigation, following a convoluted trail of good intentions, hidden motivations, and philanthropy turned big business.

Author: Laura Frantz

Publisher: Revell/Baker Publishing Group

Genre: Christian Historical Romance

Summary (Goodreads)

On a bitter December day in 1785, Silas Ballantyne arrives at the door of master blacksmith Liege Lee in York, Pennsylvania. Just months from becoming a master blacksmith himself, Silas is determined to finish his apprenticeship and move west. But Liege soon discovers that Silas is a prodigious worker and craftsman and endeavors to keep him in York. Silas becomes interested in both of Liege’s daughters, the gentle and faith-filled Eden and the clever and high-spirited Elspeth. When he chooses one, will the other’s jealousy destroy their love?

In this sweeping family saga set in western Pennsylvania, one man’s choices in love and work, in friends and enemies, set the stage for generations to come. “Love’s Reckoning” is the first entry in The Ballantyne Legacy, a rich, multi-layered historical quartet from talented writer Laura Frantz, beginning in the late 1700s and following the Ballantyne family through the end of the Civil War.

Review

Love’s Reckoning was a great change of pace for me. As much as I enjoy the quick, light reads that many Christian historical romances provide, it was refreshing to read one that has greater depth and a more involved story. It was a little lengthier than most and took me several days to get through, which was nice because it gave me something to anticipate until I could read again.

Silas is a great character with good principles and a dream to go West. Eden is sweet, if a bit too submissive at times for my taste. She is used to her needs being shoved aside in favor of the selfish desires of her sister, Elspeth. Elspeth is a devious and selfish woman, though I wondered as I read if she would have opportunity at redemption. There’s a certain passage of time in the book that makes me curious about what happened to her then. Maybe nothing significant, though I doubt she could stay out of trouble for long.

Love’s Reckoning is rich with romance and anticipation. I loved visiting the eighteenth century. There are some heartbreaking circumstances that had me mourning with the characters and wishing for swift justice. Most of the book was strong and held my attention well. After a certain tragic incident though, I found that things felt a little rushed or forced. I felt a bit disconnected to the characters and floundered a bit. I hung on though, and soon things came back together, if a bit differently than I’d hoped.

As soon as I finished Love’s Reckoning, I put the sequel on hold at the library. I look forward to continuing this series and don’t hesitate to recommend Love’s Reckoning to those who enjoy Christian historical romance as much as I do.

StealingThePreacherStealing the Preacher (Archer Brothers #2)

Author: Karen Witemeyer

Publisher: Bethany House Publishers

Published Date: June 2013

Softcover/Kindle/Audible/Nook: 352 pages

Genre: Christian Historical Romance

ISBN# 978-0764209666

Reviewed by: Shanda

FTC FYI: received a free digital galley from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

Summary (Goodreads)

On his way to interview for a position at a church in the Piney Woods of Texas, Crockett Archer can scarcely believe it when he’s forced off the train by a retired outlaw and presented to the man’s daughter as the minister she requested for her birthday. Worried this unfortunate detour will ruin his chances of finally serving a congregation of his own, Crockett is determined to escape. But when he finally gets away, he’s haunted by the memory of the young woman he left behind–a woman whose dreams now hinge on him.

For months, Joanna Robbins prayed for a preacher. A man to breathe life back into the abandoned church at the heart of her community. A man to assist her in fulfilling a promise to her dying mother. A man to help her discover answers to the questions that have been on her heart for so long. But just when it seems God has answered her prayers, it turns out the person is there against his will and has dreams of his own calling him elsewhere. Is there any way she can convince Crockett to stay in her little backwoods community? And does the attraction between them have any chance of blossoming when Joanna’s outlaw father is dead set against his daughter courting a preacher?

Review

I’ve really enjoyed the Archer brothers’ series so far. I liked Stealing the Preacher–Crockett is a great guy. I love how everyone expects him, as a preacher, to be horrible at shooting and unfamiliar with hard physical labor but he proves them wrong, earning their respect.

Joanna Robbins is a likable character, young and maybe just a bit naive, but full of faith. She is friendly, but with a streak of fire for what she believes in, and loyal to the end. I really like the clean but chemistry filled, not-too-descriptive kisses. I love when I can feel a little swooney when characters kiss but not distracted by too much intimate detail. Another thing I appreciated was that Crockett was up front and direct with Joanna whenever it was needed.

This is the third book from Karen Witemeyer I’ve read, and it certainly won’t be the last. Short-Straw Bride is my favorite so far. I look forward to reading Neill’s story (A Cowb0y Unmatched, part of the A Match Made in Texas novella collection coming January 2014). What I like about her writing is that it’s fun to read and not overly preachy. Stealing the Preacher had a bit more than her others because Crockett is, after all, a preacher, but it was woven into the story appropriately without feeling like a sermon.

Overall, Stealing the Preacher is another enjoyable Christian historical romance and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys the genre.

Whitney Nom Banner leaf lg flat

Nominate a Whitney and be entered to win
one of two $25 Amazon Gift Cards!

2013 is winding down and it’s time to get those last minute Whitney Award nominations in! Because we at NewLDSFiction.com and at LDSWomensBookReview.com love and support LDS fiction authors and the Whitney Awards, we’ve put together a fun little November Nomination Challenge to encourage everyone to nominate a qualifying book for a Whitney Award before the holidays get into full swing.

What’s a Whitney Award? It’s an annual award for novels written by LDS authors. Awards are given in eight different genre categories, plus three Best Novel categories. To be considered for an award, a book must be nominated by five readers.

Who can nominate a book for a Whitney Award? Almost anyone. You must be over 12 years old, have read the book, and not have any financial stake in the success of the book. (Example: Authors and publishers cannot nominate their own books, but their mothers can.)

Then what happens? Any book that receives five nominations is added to the genre list. Those books are read by a group of Whitney judges. The judges narrow the list down to five finalists, which are voted on by the entire Whitney Academy.

Are there other qualifications for the books? Nominees must be fiction, written by LDS authors, and published in 2013. (See the official Whitney Award fine print here and their FAQs page here.)

Looking for books that are qualified? Browse NewLDSFiction.com or click here for a list by author.

Here’s how the November Nomination Challenge works:

  • Nominations must be made November 15–30, 2013.
  • You must have read the book yourself and honestly believe it deserves a 4 or 5 star review to nominate it. This is NOT a “nominate your friends” contest. (We’re on the honor code here. Remember, we’re LDS and we believe in being honest…)
  • Click here to nominate the book. Then come back and enter the information in the Rafflecopter form below. One entry per title, limit six titles.
  • Earn extra entries by helping to spread the word. (You can do this once a day.)
Use http://bit.ly/1iefolv to send friends to LDS Women’s Book Review
Use http://bit.ly/1brxc69 to send friends to New LDS Fiction
(Note: You must nominate at least one Whitney to unlock the Spread the Word entries.
  • Winners will be chosen at random the first week of December and announced on both sites.
  • The Rafflecopter form is the same on both sites, so you only need to input your entries at one site.
  •  See fine print and disclaimer for this contest below the Rafflecopter form
