LDSWBR: What is your favorite Christmas song/hymn? Does it have special meaning to you?

STEPHANIE: I love Christmas music! One of my favorite Christmas songs is the Carol of the Drum (The Little Drummer Boy). This year it occurred to me that the song does have some deep spiritual meaning. I struggle with perfectionism in some ways (though you’d never know it in other aspects of my life). The drummer boy goes to meet the King, and doesn’t think he has a gift fit to give, so he offers the best he has–he plays his drum, and the King is pleased. Isn’t that how it is with us? We’re all struggling in our own ways and don’t really have a gift fit to give the King, but when we offer the best we have, no matter how little it is, He is pleased with our offering.

LDSWBR: Do you get together with friends/family to play board games on Christmas or New Year’s? What games do you like to play? Do you have a favorite game from your childhood?

STEPHANIE: My family does enjoy board games. As a child, I enjoyed Monopoly, but I sure don’t like it now–it takes forever! Clue was fun. A relatively new game I enjoy is Bezzerwizzer–it’s like Trivial Pursuit, only better, because you don’t have to get correct answers in all the categories to win and it lets you focus a bit more on your strengths. Other games our family likes: Ticket to Ride, Bananagrams, Apples to Apples, The Great Dalmuti. I like Quirkle too.

LDSWBR: If you could recommend only one book from those you read this year, what would it be and why?

STEPHANIE: I only get to recommend one?? Well . . . okay, if you insist. How about the Whitney Award Best Novel of the Year: The Rent Collector, by Camron Wright. To take such a miserable and unique setting and create such a beautiful, hopeful story . . . wow.

LDSWBR: I love your insight on The Little Drummer Boy. Thanks, Stephanie!

TheWitnesses

Welcome to New America, where patriots are traitors and religion is a crime. After government agent Daniel Lansbury fakes the executions of three believers on national television, he and the fugitives–Alisa Kent, Ian Roshek, and Ian’s sister, Jill–face the perilous task of outwitting President Amanda Ryce and her power-hungry Council long enough to escape to freedom. While a government reformer is on their side, rigorous new security measures thwart any chance of aid. And Daniel’s estranged father, Marcus, an underground terrorist leader, is hatching plans to sabotage the breakable trust between Daniel and Ian and put himself in power at the head of the nation. As faith and loyalties come under fire, the fugitives struggle to stop Marcus and his zealous terrorists and bring to light the wrongs committed against the citizens of this fragile, fledgling nation.

It has been interesting to see how many people enjoy playing the classic games that are familiar to most of us. However, some have mentioned games that I have never heard of before, like The Great Dalmuti. What games have been mentioned in the Countdown posts that are completely new to you?

LDSWBR: What is your favorite Christmas song/hymn? Does it have special meaning to you?

FRANK: As traditional songs go, I’ve always loved “The First Noel”. No real reason, I just like the way it sounds. My overall favorite is “The Christmas Song” by Dave Matthews. It just surprised me one year. I was listening to the radio and it came on and at first I had no idea it was a Christmas song. Then I really listened to the lyrics and I was moved a little.

LDSWBR: Do you get together with friends/family to play board games on Christmas or New Year’s? What games do you like to play? Do you have a favorite game from your childhood?

FRANK: Christmas Eve we usually play games with my wife Heidi’s family and hang out. New Year’s Eve we try to party somewhere. I think we’re doing a Masquerade Ball this year and we have to wear masks. I’m going to wear a Justin Bieber mask.

LDSWBR: If you could recommend only one book from those you read this year, what would it be and why?

FRANK: The 5th Wave. It’s rough and shocking at times, but man! It sucked me in. It’s the first book I’ve read in a long time where I’m eager for the sequel.

LDSWBR: Thank you, Frank!

LDSWBR: What is your favorite Christmas song/hymn? Does it have special meaning to you?

TRACI: I love all Christmas music. I can’t say that I have one particular favorite, but two that I really enjoy are Silent Night and Angels We Have Heard on High. Both were ones I sang in choir when I was in high school and I think they just remind me of the true meaning of Christmas.

LDSWBR: Do you get together with friends/family to play board games on Christmas or New Year’s? What games do you like to play? Do you have a favorite game from your childhood?

TRACI: My family plays games all the time and holidays are no exception. Monopoly and Parcheesi were two of my favorites from my childhood and I still play those with my family. When we have our extended family over, we tend to play games like Apples to Apples or Boggle so we can include a lot of people at the same time. Cosmic Encounters is another one my nieces and nephews love to play at our house.

LDSWBR: If you could recommend only one book from those you read this year, what would it be and why?

TRACI: My favorite fictional adventure this year was actually a series I read with my son called the Ranger’s Apprentice series by John Flanagan. I enjoyed the adventure in these books and I was impressed by the author’s ability to challenge young readers to broaden their vocabulary without taking the reader out of the story. Most importantly, this series helped my son learn to love reading.

LDSWBR: Thank you, Traci!

CD2C-2013x250

7 days until Christmas

NataliePalmerI’m a dish washing, floor sweeping, toilet cleaning mom of three kids and one hubby who searches for pockets of time in which I can sit down and write the stories that roll like a movie screen through my brain. I wish I was a good enough writer to translate what goes on in my head onto paper because I’m thoroughly entertained at all times. I’m the mom to two of the most beautiful girls I could possibly imagine and one studly five year old boy who is already breaking girls’ hearts and he’s only in kindergarten. I’m constantly trying to figure out how to lose weight though I’m not quite prepared to live like an Ethiopian just so I can wear size 8 pants (and besides, a blouse just wouldn’t look as cute without a nice muffin top pocking out on the sides, right?) I’m the primary chorister in my ward which is by far my favorite calling yet. And I’m married to the best guy in the world who I’ve followed through undgrad, med school and now a psychiatry residency in Phoenix, Arizona. We’re a happy little five-some though and I truly feel like life can’t get much better than this.

LDSWBR: What is your favorite Christmas song/hymn? Does it have special meaning to you?

NATALIE: I love “Oh Holy Night” more than I care to admit. Every time I sing it to my kids at night (no matter what time of year it is) I get all full of emotion and I want to some how dig my way into their tiny brains and make sure the pure and magnificent meaning of that song gets planted there, deep in their sub conscience so that it can forever affect the way they live their lives. Overboard? Maybe a tad, but I’ll take the risk. For me, it’s the one Christmas song that really focuses on the reason we celebrate Christ’s birth.

Long lay the world in sin and error pining,
‘Til he appeared and the soul felt its worth.

So simple and so vitally important. It’s like, you know when Nephi is having his vision of what his father saw in his dream and he asks the Spirit what the meaning of the tree of life is and in order to answer his question the Spirit shows him Christ being born of Mary and in that very moment with no other words exchanged the Spirit asks Nephi if he now knows the meaning of the tree of life and Nephi is like yeah, it’s the pure love of Christ. It’s like that with the words in “Oh Holy Night.” Christ’s birth changed everything.

That was a long answer for a very simple questions. But then again, I get paid to be long winded.

LDSWBR: Do you get together with friends/family to play board games on Christmas or New Year’s? What games do you like to play? Do you have a favorite game from your childhood?

NATALIE: Well, my favorite game is Scrabble. But that’s because I tend to sweep the floor with everyone I play with (my husband will totally deny that). I grew up playing Rook and Monopoly and Parcheesi which are definitely some of my favorites. Though lately I play a lot of Candy Land and Hungry, Hungry Hippo because when I tried to teach my five year old how to play Rook it was just a big mess.

LDSWBR: If you could recommend only one book from those you read this year, what would it be and why?

NATALIE: Hands down “A Million Miles in a Thousand Years” by Donald Miller. It may be safe to go as far as to say he’s one of my new favorite authors. If you haven’t read this book go out and buy it now. Don’t borrow it or it or get it from the library because I promise you’ll want to highlight every other word and dog tail the bologna out of those page corners. But I must warn you that reading this book will inevitably make you want to change your life, for the better, of course, but it’s still change and if you’re anything like me that is an incredibly terrifying endeavor.

LDSWBR is going to think twice before asking me questions again. It’s true, I can be very wordsy at times. But it was so fun to be apart of the count down to Christmas! Thanks LDSWBR!!!

LDSWBR: Aw, thanks, Natalie! It was fun getting to know you better.

LDSWBR: What is your favorite Christmas song/hymn? Does it have special meaning to you?

JODY: My favorite Christmas song is the classic, Silent Night. It’s the first Christmas song I remember my grandmother singing to me as a child–she had a beautiful soprano voice––and no matter where or when it’s sung, usually everybody sings at least part of it together and then I’m always moved.

LDSWBR: Do you get together with friends/family to play board games on Christmas or New Year’s? What games do you like to play? Do you have a favorite game from your childhood?

JODY: I do play board games with my family, usually later on Christmas Day and for New Years. Our favorites are Scrabble, Settlers of Cataan, Parchesi, Clue, and, not technically a board game, Telestrations. I loved the game Clue as a child. I felt so very smart when I won.

LDSWBR: If you could recommend only one book from those you read this year, what would it be and why?

JODY: Only one? Sheesh. Then I guess it would have to be Jane Eyre. I read it every year, it covers nearly every classic genre and is filled with everything great about literature.

LDSWBR: Thank you, Jody!

When Maddi Benson moves in next door to Jaxon Quayle, neither of them knows how much life is about to change. Jaxon knows he should date only girls who share his faith, but as he gets to know Maddi he wants his new neighbor to be more than a friend. To make things even more complicated, there’s Maddi’s twin brother Hadley (or Hadley-Hadley, as he calls himself), who has special needs and always seems to be hanging around, and Jaxon’s pal Tanner, who feels more than a little left out. Jaxon feels hopeful when the Bensons begin to consider joining the Church, which would solve at least one of his problems. But just when things seem to be working out, a horrible prank seems to make everything fall apart, leaving Maddi and Jaxon caught in the middle of doubt and faith, hurt and forgiveness, friendship and love.

What book do you read every year? If not every year, what book have you read several times?

9 days until Christmas

juliebellon2Julie is married with eight children and ten published books. She loves to travel and her favorite cities are probably Athens, Paris, Ottawa, and London. She would love to visit Hawaii, Australia, Ireland, and Scotland someday. She loves to read, write, teach, watch Castle, The Blacklist, and Hawaii Five-O, and eat Canadian chocolate. Not necessarily in that order.

LDSWBR: What is your favorite Christmas song/hymn? Does it have special meaning to you?

JULIE: My favorite song is Silent Night. There’s just something so reverent about it. My second favorite is I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day. I love the message in that one.

LDSWBR: Do you get together with friends/family to play board games on Christmas or New Year’s? What games do you like to play? Do you have a favorite game from your childhood?

JULIE: We do board games on New Year’s. Our favorite games are Disney Scene It, Survive, and Risk. We also have a Bellon family Air Hockey Tournament. I might have to relinquish my crown this year!

LDSWBR: If you could recommend only one book from those you read this year, what would it be and why?

JULIE: I would probably recommend Longing For Home by Sarah Eden. I love the depth of her characters and the emotion in her stories. Love all her books!

LDSWBR: Thanks, Julie!

They say to keep your friends close and your enemies closer . . .

Hostage Negotiation Team member Bart Gutierrez is shocked to find Lucy Aguayo, a girl he knew as a teenager, working for the deadly Castillo drug cartel. This revelation uncovers a secret in Bart’s family so big it forces him to accept a dangerous offer: infiltrate the cartel to keep his family safe. Once inside the cartel’s headquarters he discovers that a large-scale attack on America is imminent and the only way to prevent it is to bring Lucy in on his plans—and hope she doesn’t betray him.

Lucy Aguayo has become a key player in the Castillo cartel, but not for money or power—she’s on a mission of vengeance for her father’s murder. Just when she gets a chance to bring down the cartel leader responsible, Bart Gutierrez appears, stirring up buried feelings and disrupting all her plans. But as the enemy closes in from all sides, Lucy must choose between being free from her past or finding justice for it. Can she give up everything she’s ever worked for and reach for something more?

I *love* air hockey. A family tournament would be a blast. Who would be Air Hockey Champion in your family tournament?
