6 days left until the
first day of summer!

Gregg Luke was born in Bakersfield, California, but spent the majority of his childhood and young adult life in Santa Barbara, California. He served an LDS mission to Wisconsin, then pursued his education in biological sciences at SBCC, UCSB, BYU, and subsequently graduated from the University of Utah College of Pharmacy. His biggest loves are his family, reading, writing, music, science, and nature.

Learn more about Gregg on his website: www.greggluke.com.

LDSWBR: What activities do you and/or your family participate in every summer? Do you have plans to try something or go somewhere new this year?

GREGG: My family enjoys Mendon’s Pioneer Day festivities. It is a great community event reminiscent of a Norman Rockwell painting. Lots of activities, food, and fun. The pinnacle event is the fireworks. They are launched a hundred yards from where we sit on the lawn, so you can feel the impact of the launch as well as enjoy the burst directly over your head.

LDSWBR: Do you have a favorite summer food or drink? If so, are you willing to share the recipe?

GREGG: My family? We like all food! For barbecue, steaks and brats are a staple.

LDSWBR: What books are on your summer reading list?

GREGG: Too many to list.

LDSWBR: Blink of an Eye will be released July 1, and to catch your interest (a.k.a. torture you until the book is released) Gregg has provided the first chapter. And it is an intense first chapter!

Blink of an Eye by Gregg Luke

Chapter 1

It happened in the blink of an eye. When the light turned green, Joseph Ramirez edged forward to make a left-hand turn onto the county highway. The five o’clock traffic was exceptionally hectic, even for a small tourist town like Solvang, California. Five cars went before him—three of the drivers making the turn while talking on their cell phones.

As he followed the cars into the intersection, a blur of motion flashed in his peripheral vision. He heard a thick screeching of tires and turned his head just in time to see the grill of a large truck in his driver’s side window. Before he could flinch, the sound of exploding safety glass and rending metal filled the air. Shards of glass flew into Joseph’s soft flesh as the truck’s grill entered his small Nissan Stanza. His vision narrowed as he felt a sudden weight press down on him. A moment later he was lying sideways across the passenger seat. The console between the front seats pressed painfully into his ribs. He thought he felt one crack—maybe two. He couldn’t see anything other than the area below the dashboard and found it curious how he’d never noticed the airbag icon embossed in that section of the vinyl dashboard. He smelled diesel exhaust, burnt rubber, and the coppery scent of fresh blood. The ever-increasing weight compressed his left leg, snapped it.

The noises of destruction became a frenzied din. The extreme pressure against his skull felt like his head was in a vise. The crushing force limited his breathing and restricted all movement. Yet he was still moving—sliding sideways through a chaos of blurred images and brittle sounds.

Joseph knew exactly what was happening. He knew it would hurt at some point, too, but the adrenaline in his system was circumventing any immediate pain. The screeching, bending, sliding, shattering, and collapsing seemed to last forever.

Then he heard a deep, hollow pop and felt a shifting of bone just under his scalp. An instant later the tormented sounds vanished. The flashing lights darkened. He tried to stir but couldn’t. Yet he still felt a languid motion, as if he were floating in some thick substance that prevented rapid movement or vision beyond a few inches. In fact, everything seemed to hover in a murky haze where each sense was distorted, slowed, confused. But the oppressive weight was still crushing, the odors still sharp and noxious, his breathing short and labored. His head felt particularly strange. It felt . . . liquid.

He knew pain was imminent.

Obviously, he had just been in a severe traffic accident. A large truck had broadsided him at full speed. His car had been totaled in a matter of seconds. The intense pressure in his skull told him he was seriously injured. Worse, he couldn’t feel anything from the neck down. But he could still think. That had to be a good sign. Didn’t it?

Slowly, the sounds began to fade into a muffled gloom. No light penetrated his closed eyelids. Even the taste of blood turned bland, flavorless.

Amidst a jumble of incongruous, amorphous thoughts, Joseph wondered, Am I still alive? And if so, for how long?

Blink of an Eye by Gregg Luke (Covenant Communications; July 1, 2010) will be available for purchase at Deseret Book, Seagull Book, Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

They can do some amazing things with fireworks at the big fireworks displays these days. My favorites are the large ones that sparkle as they fall to the ground. Do you have a favorite large firework that you watch for during the big displays?

7 days left until the
first day of summer!

Nichole Giles (aka D. N. Giles) was born in Nevada, and moved with her parents to a number of cities in and around the Midwest, mostly staying in Utah, Nevada, and Arizona. Her early career plans included becoming a megastar actress or a rock star, but she decided instead to have a family and then become a writer, in that order. Writing is her passion, but she also loves to spend time with her family, travel, drive in the rain with the convertible top down, and play music at full volume so she can sing along.

Learn more about Nichole on her website: www.nicholegiles.com and her blog: Random-ish.

LDSWBR: What activities do you and/or your family participate in every summer? Do you have plans to try something or go somewhere new this year?

NICHOLE: As a family we like to hike, travel, camp and swim. We’d also love to go boating a lot–if we had a boat. Which we don’t. Yet. We also like to go to concerts, fireworks displays, and city celebrations. And we barbecue a lot, because we love being outside. We don’t have big plans for a family vacation this summer because we took a big trip this past winter, but we do hope to do lots of the fun activities available locally.

LDSWBR: Do you have a favorite summer food or drink? If so, are you willing to share the recipe?

NICHOLE: My favorite drink of all time is Dr. Pepper. I do not have that recipe–but if you know where I can find it, I’d love to know the top-secret ingredients. My favorite summer food is usually fresh veggies cooked in a variety of different ways. Or not cooked. Take peas, for instance. I prefer those fresh off the vines and out of the pods. Raspberries, too.

LDSWBR: What books are on your summer reading list?

NICHOLE: Any time you want to see what I’m reading, you can check out my list of upcoming reviews at www.starcrossedbookreviews.blogspot.com.

This summer, I’m especially excited about reading Spells by Aprilynne Pike, The Golden Spiral by Lisa Mangum, Sweethearts by Sara Zarr, Chocolate Roses by Joan Sowards, Trapped by Ronda Gibb Hinrichsen, Queen in Exile by Donna Hatch, The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner by Stephenie Meyer, and MockingJay by Suzanne Collins. There are more on my list, but they slip my mind right now. As I said, check out my review site for updates.

LDSWBR: Thank you, Nichole!

The Sharp Edge of a Knife by Nichole Giles (Golden Wings Enterprises; March 2010)is available for purchase at Amazon. Nichole’s previous novel, Mormon Mishaps (Cedar Fort; Dec 2009) is available for purchase at Mormon Mishaps.
What soda do you reach for on a hot summer day? Have you ever eaten a fruit or vegetable straight off the vine/plant/tree?

Jun 122010

9 days until the
first day of summer!

The daughter of an English teacher, Nancy Anderson was raised to appreciate the importance and beauty of words. Books were her best friends and the library one of her favorite places to be. As a mother of five and a stay at home mom, Nancy participated in her children’s education as a volunteer by teaching motion through music at a kindergarten level, Great Books to upper elementary grades, and designing and building historical costumes for the music program at her local high school for 10 years.

Nancy and her husband Jim raised their family in Utah. They currently reside in Sandy, where Nancy spends her time in her gardening, painting with watercolors, and working on manuscripts when she is not involved in her favorite activity, spending time with her 11 grandchildren.

Writing The Company of Good Women trilogy with co-authors Carroll Hofeling Morris and Lael Littke was Nancy’s first experience in novel writing and publication. Leaning into the Curves, her most recent release written with Carroll Hofeling Morris was inspired by the intriguing motorcycle adventures of Nancy’s neighbors, Tom and Elaine Kenney, who are members of The Temple Rider’s Association.

Carroll Hofeling Morris grew up in a storytelling family. She wrote her first short story in fifth grade—it was published in “The Puppy Dog’s Tale,” the newspaper for the grade school in her home town of Lovell, Wyoming. She is a graduate of BYU with a major in German and the University of Oklahoma with a MA in German. She and her husband, Gary, lived in a suburb of Minneapolis for thirty-three years before moving to the retirement community of Green Valley, Arizona. They lived in Germany two years (82-83, 88-89) when Gary was a Fulbright Exchange Teacher. They are the parents of four children.

Carroll wrote her debut novel,
The Broken Covenant, during the first teacher exchange. After writing several more novels and a non-fiction book (all published by Deseret Book), Carroll turned to copywriting to help put her children through college. Now back at doing what she loves most, Carroll has written a series, The Company of Good Women, with her sister, Nancy Anderson and her “almost sister,” Lael Littke. “It’s about about three women who want to grow into being Crusty Old Broads (COBS) written by three women who are Crusty Old Broads”

She collaborated with her sister on her most recent novel, Leaning into the Curves, a humorous and poignant look at how retirement can affect a marriage.

Learn more about Nancy and Carroll on the website: www.virtualsisters.net and the blogs: Crusty Old Broads and Counting COBs.
LDSWBR: What activities do you and/or your family participate in every summer? Do you have plans to try something or go somewhere new this year?

NANCY: Our summers are scheduled around family, flowers, and vegetables! Grandkids and gardening. We started the season this year with a visit to our daughter and her family in Georgia, followed by a visit to our son and his family in Vegas. Now that the chili sauce garden (tomatoes and peppers) is planted and green beans are climbing the fence I can look forward to my adventure with Carroll in Boise with the Temple Rider’s Association. That will be followed by a few days with Jim in Logan for the Utah Festival Opera in July. The rest of the summer will revolve around family get-togethers–lots–in the back yard and a retreat for Jim and me.

CARROLL: Gary and I live in the retirement community of Green Valley, Arizona, so our summers are very much like the rest of the year, only we drink a lot more water and stay out of the midday sun. We take advantage of the organized activities, swim almost every day, and entertain other year-rounders. We rarely get visitors during the summer—not even our kids want to come when the temps can hit 107 degrees.

As far as trips go, my sister, Nancy, and I will be driving to Boise the end of June to participate in the Temple Riders’ rally! (That group figured prominently in our novel, Leaning into the Curves.) We’re looking forward to the camaraderie, motorcycle rides, great entertainment, and the temple/community service day.

In July, Gary and I will be back in that part of Idaho for a wedding, family reunions, and the 50th reunion of the Jerome High School class of 1960. Right after we get home, I’ll be participating in the ANWA writer’s retreat Clay Springs, AZ. After that, we’ll be enjoying the monsoon season–hopefully it brings a lot of rain this year.

LDSWBR: Do you have a favorite summer food or drink? If so, are you willing to share the recipe?

NANCY: My favorite summer drink is ice water. I always have a glass in hand. My favorite hot weather food is cold slices of watermelon–no recipe necessary. Other than that I favor anything I don’t have to plan, shop for, or cook. Three cheers for Harmon’s Deli.

CARROLL: My favorite summer drink is cold Crystal Lite lemonade that’s been enhanced with a sprig of spearmint from the garden and a slice or two of lemon.
My favorite quick summer supper is cold tuna and macaroni salad:

Package of macaroni, cooked
Large can albacore tuna, drained
2/3 cup of sharp cheddar cheese, grated
1 large sweet onion, diced
2 stalks celery, sliced
2 cups frozen peas
1 red or yellow pepper diced
Enough mayonnaise to moisten
Salt and pepper to taste

Chill thoroughly before serving.
LDSWBR: What books are on your summer reading list?

NANCY: My summer reading list includes books by favorite new author James Lee Burke and YA novels recommended by my 17 year old grand daughter such as The Name of this Book is a Secret by Pseudonymous Bosch.

CARROLL: The Silence of God by Gale Sears & Prayers for Sale by Sandra Dallas.

LDSWBR: Nancy and Carroll, thank you so much!

10 days until the
first day of summer!

Michele Ashman Bell grew up in St. George, Utah. In fourth grade her teacher wrote on her report card that she had a tendency to daydream and would probably do well with creative writing. Her love for books and learning about people and places has helped her make her teacher’s prediction come true. Michele is the author of many books and Christmas stories. She is married and is the mother of four children, and a grandma of one. Aside from supporting her children in all of their many activities, she loves to travel, do research for her books and eat chocolate.

Learn more about Michele and her books on her website: www.micheleashmanbell.com and her blog: Michele Ashman Bell.
LDSWBR: What activities do you and/or your family participate in every summer? Do you have plans to try something or go somewhere new this year?

MICHELE: We have a tradition in our cul-de-sac to get fireworks (the legal kind) and set them off in our circle. All the neighbors come out and sit on the curb and light fireworks. The little kids run around with sparklers and the big kids (aka Dads) do the fireworks. It’s a lot of fun and it’s a neat way to spend time together as neighbors and friends.

We usually avoid Disneyland/Disneyworld like the plague during the busy season, but the only time we can go anywhere together as a family is the end of August, so we are going to brave Disneyworld. Even if we’re standing in line for hours at least we’ll be together, right?

LDSWBR: Do you have a favorite summer food or drink? If so, are you willing to share the recipe?

MICHELE: I look forward to all the great fresh fruit in summer; strawberries, pineapple, cantaloupe, especially. I also love artichokes. But my favorite are the summer salads.

Here’s a recipe for my new favorite:

Strawberry Salad

1 lg bowl spinach ( I love spinach, if you don’t use your favorite greens)
1/2 package bacon cooked and crumbled
Cashews
1 sliced purple onion
1 cup sliced strawberries
15 fried won tons cut into strips (I also use fried flour tortillas)

Dressing

2 tbs. red wine vinegar
3 tbs. sugar
1/2 cup oil (good quality)
1/2 tsp. dry mustard
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 cup strawberry jam ( you can substitute with blackberry or raspberry or boysenberry jam)

Combine all ingredients and whisk in oil in a steady stream. Dress salad just before serving. You can add grilled chicken to make it more of a main meal. You can mix it up by adding your fave nuts (candied) and omit whatever ingredients are not on hand. Also try a little cheese, blue perhaps. The possibilities are endless. Have fun.

LDSWBR: That salad sounds delicious! What books are on your summer reading list?

MICHELE: Gale Seare’s new book, Silence of God, is first on my list. I also have President Uchtdorf’s book, The Remarkable Soul of a Woman, in my stack.

LDSWBR: Thank you very much, Michele!

Hometown Girl by Michele Ashman Bell (Covenant Communications; July 15, 2010) will be available for purchase at Seagull Book, Deseret Book and Amazon.
Our favorite fireworks are called Tasmanian Devils. They start as a fountain then explode, releasing several spinning flower-type fireworks onto the ground. Does your family have a favorite firework? Do you visit a formal fireworks display or do you like to set your own fireworks off at home?

11 days left until the
first day of summer!

Donna Hatch’s passion for writing began at age 8 she wrote her first short story. During her sophomore year in high school, she wrote her first full-length novel. Her writing has won or been nominated as a finalist in many writing contests including Golden Quill and SARA’s Merrit. In between caring for six children, (7 counting her husband), her day job, and her many volunteer positions, she manages to carve out time to indulge in her writing obsession. A native of Arizona, she writes Regency Romance and Fantasy. And yes, all of her heroes are patterned after her husband of over 21 years, who continues to prove that there really is a happily ever after.

To learn more about Donna and her books, visit her website: www.donnahatch.net and her blog: Donna Hatch, Romance Writer.
LDSWBR: What activities do you and/or your family participate in every summer? Do you have plans to try something or go somewhere new this year?
DONNA: Every summer, we have a family reunion — often over the 4th of July weekend — and this year is no exception. We also plan to have our annual family getaway in Mexico. We have a timeshare in Rocky Point and our children look forward to our trip every year.

I also plan to attend a writer’s retreat where I do a lot of writing, plotting, brainstorming, and eat copious amounts of junk food with my awesome writer friends.

12 days left until the
first day of summer!

Sarah is the author of multiple Regency-era romances, including the 2008 Whitney Award Finalist Seeking Persephone and the acclaimed 2010 release Courting Miss Lancaster. Sarah spends enormous amounts of time avoiding responsible things like cooking dinner and doing laundry and making vital phone calls. Instead, she fills her days with making up stories, talking to voices in her head, and laughing hysterically at her own wit. In other words, Sarah is not normal. She is an author.

Visit Sarah’s website & blog: www.sarahmeden.com.
LDSWBR: What activities do you and/or your family participate in every summer? Do you have plans to try something or go somewhere new this year?

SARAH: Every summer my children participate in The Great Summer Vacation Bickering Session. It begins within moments of school letting out for the summer and does not end until the day they return to school. While they are undertaking this annual tradition, I participate in my own yearly ritual: resisting the urge to sell them to the circus.

LDSWBR: A lot of moms can relate to that ritual. Do you have a favorite summer food or drink? If so, are you willing to share the recipe?

SARAH: Favorite food or drink…? I would have to say ice cream. The recipe is very, very simple.

Step 1: Gather loose change from couch cushions, car consoles, the children’s dressers, etc.

Step 2: Take that loose change to the grocery store.

Step 3: Buy a carton of ice cream and take it back home.

Step 4: Eat ice cream in large quantities, possibly directly from the carton with a soup ladle.

Step 5: Feel guilty. But not that guilty.

LDSWBR: What books are on your summer reading list?

SARAH: What books aren’t on my summer reading list? I have a “to be read” stack that would give the Empire State Building a height complex. Among the titles are the latest by Annette Lyon, Janette Rallison, Josi Kilpack, etc., etc., etc. I also have a few old friends I want to revisit: Jane Austen, Georgette Heyer, William Shakespeare. Dude. I need to get started.

LDSWBR: Thank you, Sarah!

Courting Miss Lancaster by Sarah M. Eden (Covenant Communications; March 2010) is available for purchase at Deseret Book and Seagull Book.

Do you have a favorite ice cream shop that you frequent during the summer? What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
