13 days until the
first day of summer!

What can I say about me? I have a wonderful husband and seven (almost eight!) children whom I adore. I am Canadian, but married an American and settled in the States. I have the best of both worlds! My claim to fame is that I met Princess Diana when I was twelve years old. I love to travel and my favorite cities are probably Athens, Paris, Ottawa, and London. I would love to visit Australia and Scotland someday. And New Zealand. Ooh, and Ireland. Well, you get the picture. I’m learning to play the bagpipes and I’m not very good at it, (I think I sound like a sick moose) but I’m working on it. I teach a journalism course for BYU Continuing Education, which makes me happy since I’m able to use my Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary Education-English Teaching for something other than a conversation piece. I love to read, write, teach, play volleyball or badminton, and take long bubble baths (which doesn’t happen too often, but I love it when it does). I have the most amazing supportive family and being a published author fulfilled a lifelong dream.

Visit Julie’s website: www.juliebellon.com and read her Thursday blog posts on Six LDS Writers and a Frog.
LSDWBR: What activities do you and/or your family participate in every summer? Do you have plans to try something or go somewhere new this year?

JULIE: Every summer we travel to a different state since we are trying to get to every state. So far our family has visited seventeen so we still have a long way to go. We have loved seeing some amazing things so far, like Mount Rushmore, the Redwoods, Mesa Verde, Yellowstone Park, Glacier Park, two presidential museums, John Wayne’s birthplace, and of course, Disneyland to name a few.

LDSWBR: Do you have a favorite summer food or drink? If so, are you willing to share the recipe?

JULIE: I really, really love raspberry lemonade in the summer. Sometimes I just wish I had a verandah so I could sit on it with my tall glass of lemonade. For now, I just make do with my ordinary porch.

LDSWBR: What books are on your summer reading list?

JULIE: Mockingjay, the third in the Hunger Games trilogy, Alma the Younger by H.B. Moore, A Time to Die by Jeffrey S. Savage, and Cold as Ice by Stephanie Black. I’m currently reading Between the Lines by Erin Klingler and just finished Wrong Number by Rachelle Christensen. There’s so many great books out now, I can hardly walk into a bookstore because there’s so many I want to get!

LDSWBR: Thanks, Julie!

14 days until the
first day of summer!

I say I’m a craft-challenged, fifty-something, LDS, wife, mother, grandmother and novelist who lives in rural Maryland. That pretty much sums me up. My husband had a heart attack a few years ago. Gratefully, he is doing well, but the seeds of “Awakening Avery” were sown on the harrowing ambulance ride that night as I realized how quickly we can be catapulted into a different life. If I could afford a second house I’d choose one on Anna Maria Island. I fell in love with Florida’s Gulf Coast and the Ca D’Zan six years ago. And yes, I really did eat Slumgolian growing up. Would I recommend it? Hmmmm. . . . .

You can learn more about Awakening Avery and Laurie Lewis on her website: www.laurielclewis.com and her blog: A View From the Other Side of the Hill.
LDSWBR: What activities do you and/or your family participate in every summer? Do you have plans to try something or go somewhere new this year?

LAURIE: We generally plan a big, inclusive family vacation every summer, but this year we’re postponing the family gathering until October in order to celebrate my husband’s 60th birthday. Our destination this year is oceanside in Newport News, California. This family gathering is the highlight of each year, then we’ll gather again for one of the holidays.

Aside from the big vacation, we generally spend summers laying low at home, poolside, with a revolving door for family and friends to pass through.

LDSWBR: Do you have a favorite summer food or drink? If so, are you willing to share the recipe?

LAURIE: I’m a water-drinking maniac, so that’s my drink of choice. We grill a lot, and eat tons of salads and fruit during the summer, but otherwise, my favorite summer food would probably be my friend’s Sloppy Joe recipe. I make it up in large batches and freeze it so I can pull it out for a quick, “warm-it-up” supper. I’ve never met anyone who didn’t go gaga over these.

Pam Sloppy Joes
Posted by Laurie Lewis

Description: Family fav!

Ingredients:
1 lb ground beef
1 med. onion
1 med. green pepper
2 Tbsp margarine
2 tsp. mustard
2 Tbsp. br. sugar
¾ C. ketchup
1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
Directions:Sauté onion and pepper in margarine. Add ground beef and brown. Add remaining ingredients and enjoy!

(You can adjust onion and pepper amounts to suit taste. This freezes very well so when ground beef is on sale, make up a big batch and put it away for a lazy day!)

Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Category: Main Meals
Servings: 6

LDSWBR: That recipe sounds delicious! What books are on your summer reading list?

LAURIE: These are here, in my office, ready for me to enjoy: Gale Sears, “The Silence of God”; Remini’s “The Battle of New Orleans,” for research purposes; “Wednesday’s Letters” and “Recovering Charles” because I’m catching up on great books I missed the first go-round.

LDSWBR: Thank you very much, Laurie!

Awakening Avery by Laurie Lewis (Brigham Distributing; April 2010) is available for purchase at Amazon, Deseret Book, and This is the Place, an online LDS store where autographed copies can be purchased.

Do you get together every year with your extended family for a big vacation or family reunion? If so, do you always go to the same place or do you switch it up?

17 days until the
first day of summer!

Ronda Gibb Hinrichsen first knew she wanted to be a writer when she was in the 6th grade. Her English teacher had been reading S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders to the class, and when she reached the section where Johnny urged Ponyboy to stay “gold,” Ronda realized she wanted to write “golden” words just as Hinton had. More than that, she wanted those words to encourage the “golden” in others.

In reaching for that goal, Ronda studied English at Ricks College, Weber State University, and Utah State University. In 1994, her first magazine article was published, and she has since published numerous articles and short stories in print and online mediums. Her first suspense novel,
Missing, was published in 2009, and an early version of her second novel, Trapped, won first place in the League of Utah Writer’s 2009 full-length manuscript contest before it was accepted and later published in May 2010. Ronda enjoys teaching and speaking in various venues. She loves to hear from her readers and can be contacted at rondagibbhinrichsen@gmail.com.

Visit Ronda’s website: www.rondahinrichsen.com and her blogs: The Write Blocks and My Favorite Things.
LDSWBR: What activities do you and/or your family participate in every summer? Do you have plans to try something or go somewhere new this year?

RONDA: We have a farm with hay to grow and haul, etc., so we don’t often get away too much in the summer. We will likely go on a short camping trip or maybe take an afternoon or two to go kayaking with my husband. My husband and I are planning on taking a trip to Europe sometime before next summer, however, so that will be our vacation.

LDSWBR: Do you have a favorite summer food or drink? If so, are you willing to share the recipe?

RONDA: My favorite summer food is gelato. Authentic Italian gelato is best, but I’ll settle for regular ice cream if I have to (grin.) Follow this link to a quick, Chocolate Chip Raspberry Ice Cream recipe.

LDSWBR: What books are on your summer reading list?

RONDA: I have a stack of books I’m slowly but surely working my way through, but I’m sure more will be added before the summer is over. :) At the top is Queen in Exile by Donna Hatch and Chocolate Roses by Joan Soward. I also want to finish Josi Kilpack’s culinary series. I already know a lot about each story because I helped critique them, but I’m looking forward to reading the finished products.

LDSWBR: Thank you for sharing with us, Ronda!

TRAPPED by Ronda Gibb Hinrichsen (Walnut Springs Press; May 2010) is available for purchase at independent book stores, Deseret Book, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Borders. You can also purchase Trapped directly from Ronda’s website.

Have you ever traveled to Europe? If so, what part of your visit did you enjoy the most? If not, where in Europe would you like to visit most?

18 days left until the
first day of summer!

Kimberly Job was born in Utah, the middle of three children and the only girl. She graduated with a degree in Business Management, which later proved useful as she ran a successful small business. She and her husband, Scott, have a combined family of ten children–seven boys and three girls. Kimberly loves being a mom and feels that raising exceptional children is her most valuable mission in this life. Her writing reflects the many personal experiences she has gone through and offers insight on difficult issues from a refreshing gospel perspective. In addition to writing, she is an avid reader and scrapbooker. She loves to cook, play with her children, snuggle with her husband, and will never tire of learning new things.

Visit Kimberly’s website: www.kimberlyjob.com and blog: Scribbled Scraps.
LDSWBR: What activities do you and/or your family participate in every summer? Do you have plans to try something or go somewhere new this year?

KIMBERLY: This will be our first summer as a married couple and combined family, so we look forward to starting some new traditions. Our days will be filled with picnics, swimming, camping, soccer tournaments, and hopefully maybe a vacation thrown in–and chores!

LDSWBR: Do you have a favorite summer food or drink?

KIMBERLY: Bean Salsa a.k.a Cowboy Caviar made with fresh garden tomatoes. We eat it with tortilla chips, on fish, chicken, and omelettes, and even by the spoonful. It’s that yummy!

LDSWBR: What books are on your summer reading list?

KIMBERLY: The Golden Spiral, Bright Blue Miracle, I am Not a Serial Killer, Mockingjay, When Panic Attacks, Imprints, Gravity vs. the Girl, the Road Show and lots more.

LDSWBR: Thank you, Kimberly!
I’ll Know You By Heart by Kimberly Job (Valor Publishing; March 2010) is available for purchase from Amazon as well as Kimberly’s website.
There’s nothing quite like tomatoes fresh from the garden. What is your favorite way to eat fresh, homegrown tomatoes? Or are you one who doesn’t care for tomatoes?
