Summary

What would you do if you were given a second chance?

Annabelle, whom nearly everyone calls Anne, has been stuck in the past for two years. Numbed by grief over her husband’s unexpected death and overwhelmed with the responsibility of raising their three young children alone, Anne agrees to let a friend take the kids for the weekend while she tries to get some much-needed rest at her parent’s home.

But when Anne wakes up the next morning, she is suddenly sixteen again. And it just happens to be the worst day she spent as a teenager.

High school the second time around brings unforeseen changes and frustrations, but remembering that her future husband, Mitch, has just returned from a mission and is living on the other side of town gives Anne hope. Getting Mitch’s attention (for the second time) is more complicated than she could have imagined, but Anne discovers she is stronger than she believed possible—and there just might be a future for her after all.

Review

I can honestly say I’ve never read a book quite like this one. As a reviewer, I love to discover books that surprise me. A Way Back to You did so more than once.

The book starts out on a more serious note with Annie, a mother of three young children and a widow of three years, struggling through one of the hardest days of her life since losing her husband. Instead of coming across as depressing or overly heavy, though, it was an intriguing and relatable opening, at least as far as the hard mothering days. By midway through the second chapter I was emotionally invested in Anne’s story, even blinking back a few tears as I read.

It had been a while since I read the summary for A Way Back to You, so I was pleasantly surprised when Anne awoke as a teenager. I enjoy time travel books, but don’t read many where the character travels back to a time in their own life. The clothing descriptions took me back to my own high school years. The frequent tears and mood swings experienced by Anne as her 38-year-old intellect dealt with frustrating teenage hormones made me grateful I would never be a teenager again.

The romance aspect of the story embraced both the more mature love of married adults as well as the teenage crush-turned-love experiences. I was satisfied with the romantic resolution and glad for Annie, though I could see how some might consider it a little too convenient. My romantic heart was happy with the ending, though, and I think other readers who enjoy a good clean romance will like it, too. I definitely look forward to reading more from Emily.

Today is the release day of this book! How cool is it that I am reviewing the book on it’s birthday!! Today would be a great day to purchase your own copy.
Book Description:
Her eyes saved his life. Her dreams released his darkness.

Instead of sleeping, Parker Chipp enters the dream of the last person he’s had eye contact with. He spends his nights crushed by other people’s fear and pain, by their disturbing secrets–and Parker can never have dreams of his own. The severe exhaustion is crippling him. If nothing changes, Parker could soon be facing psychosis and even death.

Then he meets Mia. Her dreams, calm and beautifully uncomplicated, allow him blissful rest that is utterly addictive. Parker starts going to bizarre lengths to catch Mia’s eye every day. Everyone at school thinks he’s gone over the edge, even his best friend. And when Mia is threatened by a true stalker, everyone thinks it’s Parker.

Suffering blackouts, Parker begins to wonder if he is turning into someone dangerous. What if the monster stalking Mia is him after all?

My Review:
I’m so excited to review Insomnia! Ever since I first saw the cover I knew I would love this book. In fact, I pre-ordered the book so I could get my hands on it as fast as I  could. The cover is one of the best I’ve seen this year. If you think the cover is creepy and haunting, this gives you a good idea about what you will find inside.

Even though main character Parker scares you with his bizarre actions, he is a very sympathetic character. You can’t help but feel his pain when he longs so much to be able to have a good nights sleep. Parker doesn’t sleep at night because he lives within others dreams. He wanders undetected in the dream of the last person he made eye contact with.  As I was reading this book I felt a more appropriate title for this book would have been, Intense!
The story hooks you from the beginning and never sets you free until the end. I was so impressed with the great writing in this book considering this is Jenn’s first published novel. If you are familiar with I’m Not a Serial Killer, by Dan Wells, it is a creepy and fantastic book. I need to warn Dan that Jenn is fast on his tail for mastering the creepy factor. She has created such a dark tale that keeps the reader guessing and freaked out. This YA thriller I can guarantee you is going to be making a name for itself and it’s author.

I asked the author about the 2nd book in the series and here is what she told me…

“The 2nd book is in process, and it should be next summer but we don’t have a specific date yet. The name is very close to being decided and I’m really excited about it. In this book we’ll delve more into the world of the Night Walkers. All the same characters, plus new ones and we’ll answer a whole lot of questions.”
I also wanted my readers to know Jenn’s exciting news about her book. Here it is…
“Insomnia is set to be published in five languages so far: English, Italian, German, Chinese and Hungarian! I’m thrilled to have my story coming out in so many countries!”

I’ve told you why I like Insomnia so much, I wanted to know what the author liked about her book. She gave some great answers and I have to agree with all of the reasons.

The Five Things I Really Like About Insomnia –

1 – How different it seems to be from every other book out there.
2 – How the psychological thriller aspect can really keep you guessing.
3 – The characters (Parker AND his amazing friends).
4 – The creep factor (I love hearing it gave people the chills).
and last but not least…
5 – The cover. It conveys everything I wanted it to and so many things I didn’t even know I wanted. LOVE IT.

Summary

Have you ever felt you might be special?

Where does that feeling come from—and what does it really mean?

The truth is that we are special, because we are all beloved children of our Heavenly Father, and we enjoyed a special, personal relationship with Him before coming to earth. Having left His presence, we feel a void, a homesickness that reminds us that we are more than mortal beings and inclines us toward our Father and His love.

But we are sometimes persuaded by the lie that we are more special than others. The lie lifts us above others, creates feelings of entitlement, and convinces us that the void we feel signifies our personal destiny for glory. It inclines us to seek fame, prestige, or wealth as proof of our superiority over others.

Each of us is constantly enticed by this truth and this lie, and we respond to both using four strategies to manage our acceptance or denial, each with its defining feature of pride, despair, selfishness, or true discipleship. In Are We Special? authors Jeffrey Reber and Steven Moody show us how to increase our acceptance of the truth and denial of the lie in order to become true disciples of Jesus Christ.

Review

I love a clean cover with lots of white space and simple, eye-catching art. With a question for a title and the dichotomy of the subtitle, I was intrigued from the start. How can our being “special” be both a truth AND a lie? It definitely urged me to read on and find out how it all fit together.

Being told all throughout childhood that we were a special generation that would lead the way into the millennium, etc., unintentionally encouraged me to have a somewhat inflated attitude regarding myself and those of my generation in the Church. There is an emphasis in my generation’s culture about feeling special and making sure your kids feel special. I have always felt like there was something wrong with that but couldn’t quite explain why. Now I understand that it isn’t recognizing that we are special that’s the problem, it’s feeling MORE special than someone else that is the real issue.

The authors state that being separated from our Father in Heaven during our time in mortality creates a void that Satan takes advantage of, tempting us to follow selfish, denigrating interests to fill what only a close relationship with our Father can only ever truly fill. It is that strong and special bond we enjoyed before this life that we miss and often end up trying to replace with empty, meaningless and even harmful pursuits.

They go on to explain the TRUTH and the LIE: While we, as children of God, are indeed special to Him, as members of the Church, we might mistakenly consider ourselves of more worth to Heavenly Father than His other children. We ARE special to our Heavenly Father, but we are not MORE special to Him.

“We can believe the adversary’s lie and try to fill our void with the false belief that we are better than others rather than lowly and humble servants of all.”   –Are We Special?

The chapter examining the Pharisees had the most impact on me. I am guilty of sitting in Sunday School, answering “No” to the question, “Are you like the Pharisees of old?” After reading this section, I have learned there is a subtlety to these Pharisaical characteristics that, at one time or another, I have indeed been guilty of possessing.

Another section that really stood out to me was entitled “Sin and Perfection.” I have had issues with perfectionism most of my life, and there was one sentence that opened my eyes in a way that nothing else has previously. The authors explain that the root of the word translated into “perfect” in certain scriptures of the Bible means “whole” or “complete,” which I had previously known but had never considered in the context of my current relationship with my Savior:

“Perfection, understood relationally, is not a property of the individual; it is a quality of relationship with the divine.”  –Are We Special?

The authors don’t just focus on the ways we struggle with being self-centered, modern-day Pharisees. They also discuss how we can be true disciples of Christ, submitting our will to His and accepting the fullness of His love so that we can truly love others.

He delighted in the happiness of others, the happiness He could bring them.      –Are We Special?

They encourage readers to take time to meditate and reflect, staying mindful about activities and if they are helping to develop a closer relationship with Christ. Each chapter and section is full of layers and depth that I did not expect and that have changed so much about the way I view myself and others, including my Savior and Father in Heaven. Everything relates back to the Savior and His Atonement for us, as well as the immense and incomprehensible Love that He and Heavenly Father have for every one of us.

Without hesitation, I recommend this book to everyone. There is wisdom and insight in this book to which my review cannot do justice. I will be purchasing copies of Are We Special? for myself and several loved ones. Visit the links below to learn more about Are We Special?, the authors, and how to purchase a copy for yourself.

EXCERPT:

After practice, Coach Dennis critiqued our performance and tried to get us geared up for the next practice. I wondered how many people would drop out between now and then. I sat on the field as the group dispersed. My calves were aching, and I spent a few minutes stretching, berating myself for not keeping up with running in the off-season.
I watched the track clear out slowly, the cooled-off bodies beginning to feel the icy chill in the air. I felt the frosty lawn beneath me, cool moisture penetrating the thick black fabric of my Lycra running pants. I didn’t care though. It felt good. The cold feeling was numbing, and I wanted to stay on the frosty lawn right in the center of the track.
Just ahead of me, Gabe De La Cruz was walking around the track, cooling off. Despite the frigid weather, he had worked up a sweat, evident by the wet trail that ran down the course of his back. He stretched his arms over his head, and the muscles in his back rippled under his white T-shirt. He turned around quickly and caught my eyes just before I could turn my head away. I looked out onto the bleacher stands and then toward the parking lot, but my eyes were automatically drawn back to Gabe as I sensed he was walking toward me.
This time, his eyes held mine as he closed the distance between us. He stopped just short of reaching me. He bent down to pick up a gray hooded sweatshirt just a few feet from where I sat. Turning his eyes away from me, he pulled the sweatshirt over his head. I took the opportunity to look away from him and focus on the poor movements I was attempting to pass off as stretching.
Despite my focused attempt to look nowhere near his direction, I saw him continue toward me. He dropped down to the ground beside me, draping his arms over his lanky bent legs.
“Feels good, right? A run like that?” he said.
Nothing about running on this wintry day felt good, and the thought made me question myself for doing winter track for about the twentieth time that day. “I guess,” I said.
He looked at me, running a hand through his brown, wavy hair. I pulled my eyes away from his hair, and they inadvertently traveled down his arm to his hand, which moved to the grass between us. He ran his fingers through the cold grass, plucking up small bunches and letting the short brown blades fall back to the ground. He repeated the action—grabbing and tossing small bits of grass—over and over, as he shifted his eyes from me to the grass between us. Maybe he was thinking of something to say. Maybe he was nervous.
“You going to do hurdles again this year?”
Hurdles? I tried hurdles once last year, at the insistence of Coach Dennis, who’d wanted me to give them a try. It had been one lucky practice, followed by one terribly demoralizing meet in which I’d tripped twice over the hurdles and had come in last place.
“No,” I said. “I doubt Coach Dennis wants me anywhere near the hurdles. I suck.”
“You weren’t that bad,” he said, his hands still plucking grass, his eyes still on me. A slight smile came to his lips.
“You don’t have to say that.”
“You could do it,” he said. “You have the leg strength. You just need to work on your rhythm a little.”
My eyes went instinctively to my legs, wondering how he would be able to gauge my leg strength. I looked back at him, and he flinched, probably realizing how awkward that had sounded.
My Review
The Huaca starts as many YA contemporary books showing the life of a teenage girl. Ellie is a junior in high school trying to fit in and not always doing a great job of it. Ellie is on the outs with her best friend of 10 years, Sarah. Ellie does something that gets Sarah’s prospective boyfriend in big trouble. Also, Ellie’s mother was murdered so her life was turned upside down. Ellie meets the “strange” kid (Gabe) at school and they become friends. Through him Ellie learns some new details about her mother’s murder.
Without giving too much away, Gabe, whose grandfather was an Incan from Peru has a Huaca at his disposal. Author   Marcia Mickelson spoke of what the Huaca is  and how it is used in her story…
“A huaca (pronounced waca) is an object that represents
something revered. Huaca is a word from the Quechua
language, a native American language of South America. In my story, the huaca is an Incan artifact .(The picture of the Huaca is found on the front cover of the book.)

Gabe De La Cruz has the huaca, and it has been passed

down to him from his ancestors.  Ellie Cummings wants to
know who killed her mother. She turns to Gabe who claims he can communicate with her dead mother. Ellie takes a chance and discovers that the truth may be better kept a secret.”
The book turns from a high school drama/love story, into a full blown mystery uncovering who killed her mother. There is a supernatural feel to the Huaca or some may see it as sacred. That is what it felt more like to me. Gabe and Ellie grow close very quickly, but it is through their experiences together using the Huaca. It all feels OK though because of their backgrounds and hardships they both have gone through. Ellie and Gabe both grow stronger to face their trials in their lives. I liked how Marcia wrote the relationship between the two characters. It showed true loyalty between friends as they are dealing with grief and sorrow.
The story flows along so well that you can’t quit reading. You want answers to the mystery right along with Ellie. I have to say I was surprised when those answers came. Even though this is written for teens, I can tell you that adults will also be pulled into the stories of Ellie and Gabe. This captivating tale with a flavor of Incan history will be sure to draw you in until the last page is read.

My Review:

I really loved this series, because at the heart of it is Time Travel. (You should know by now I LOVE Time Travel stories!) The twists in this story keep you guessing throughout both books. Right off the bat you can’t help but love main character Hannah Kraeger. She is kind, courageous and adventurous. You keep reading these books so quickly because you can’t wait to see what happens next to Hannah and her good-looking and loyal boyfriend, Dr. Seth McAllister. Where and when will she time travel to next? How will her traveling affect her future and those she loves? This book really makes you think a lot about how you could drastically change happenings if you time traveled. Hannah is so brave as she dares the fates. The suspense is high in both books. Just when you think everything has turned out perfectly for Hannah and Seth you come to the end of book two and the first chapter of book three…wham! I wasn’t expecting at all what I read. I couldn’t believe it! It’s like a roller coaster ride that never ends.  There are two more books in the series that clearly show that more trouble awaits the couple and their families.

If you are looking for a great series, a well-written flowing story, clean romance, chock-full of mystery/suspense and a whole lot of time travel…you need to read the Yesterday series: Yesterday and The Locket by Amanda Tru. I know I can’t wait to read more.

Although I loved my job as an elementary school teacher, I am now very blessed to be mommy to three adorable little boys and living my dream of being an author. I have a vivid imagination and have always been easily entertained by the stories in my head. Fortunately, I also love to paint those pictures with words. I like writing a wide variety of genres, and my current book list includes everything from a Christian time travel / romance series, to an action-packed suspense, to a romance involving a woman who likes to anonymously play matchmaker. Although I enjoy historical, Christian, paranormal, suspense, and everything in between, my books all have one thing in common–I love to surprise my readers with the unexpected. I currently have 7 books available for kindle, nook, and paperback. My family and I live in a small Idaho town where the number of cows outnumbers the number of people.

Book Description:

Sara Bogus’s life turns upside down when she discovers an emerald ring that once belonged to Cleopatra. The fun of discovering the ring’s unique abilities turns to fear when she finds out a dangerous cult bent on restoring Rome to power is after the ring. Forced to choose between keeping the ring and saving her friends, Sara learns the price of bravery in this electrifying read!
My Review:
The Emerald Ring is such a great Middle Grade book. This is a book I would love to read to my school kids and my kids at home. My daughter almost stole it from me when she read the title and saw it was about Cleopatra. She loves Egypt and anything having to do with Egypt. Even though she is a mid-teen, I know that she will love this story. It has mystery, adventure, intrigue and everything you love in a fantasy book.
Main character Sara is a typical 12 year old girl, though she does happen to find an emerald ring of her Grandmothers that… just happened to belong to Cleopatra. Then thieves come looking for the emerald. I liked how she had her problems, but that didn’t stop her from doing the things she should do and remaining a true friend. My favorite aspect of Sara were the dreams she had at night. She often would see things through the eyes of a cat. I am a cat owner and the author did a very good job of how a cat would see things. What a fun concept!
This book is a winner on so many levels. As a teacher I love how it explores aspects of history. I know kids between the ages of 7-14 will really love this book. Even this old kid enjoyed reading The Emerald Ring. I can’t wait to see what else comes next in the series as Cleopatra’s other jewels are brought into the story.
