Goodreads Book Summaries

Fractured Light

I’m dying, I thought. This was unexpected and not at all how I envisioned my death. I was supposed to die gardening in a flowerbed as a hundred-year-old woman, not as a seventeen-year-old trapped in a lake beneath inches of ice.

Llona Reese is used to living on the run. After the Vykens killed her parents, she knew they would eventually come for her too. She can’t take any chances. But when she starts to make friends for the first time in her life, she gets careless and lets her guard down. Big mistake.

As an Aura, Llona can manipulate light and harness its energy. But if she wants to survive, Llona will have to defy the Auran Council and learn to use her power as a weapon against the Vyken whose sole desire is to take her light. Now she’s caught in something even bigger than she can understand, with a power she can’t wield, and no one she can trust, except, just maybe, a mysterious stranger.

In this breathtaking and romantic adventure, Rachel McClellan delivers a truly mesmerizing story that will keep you guessing to the very end.

Fractured Soul

Llona will do whatever it takes to protect her new found friends and home, but the dark plot that is threatening Lucent Academy, a school that’s supposed to be a safe place for Auras, may be too powerful for even Llona to defeat. This fast-paced tale of love, loyalty, and overcoming the darkness will keep you on the edge of your seat until the last page!

Fractured Truth

Llona is determined to end the fight with the Vykens once and for all. All she needs is to find and destroy the Shadow—the ultimate source of dark power. My Review

I have been wanting to read this series for quite some time.  I am so glad I finally made the time to read it.  The Fractured Light series is full of action, romance, suspense, very cool magic, and of course amazing characters.  Llona is one tough cookie.  Although, when we first meet her in Fractured Light, she is shy, but aware of the fact that she is an Aura.  She can manipulate light, but has never been taught how to use it.  She shies away from people and doesn’t want to use her light to help others.  Mysterious things start happening to her and they also involve her friend May, who also shows signs of powers.  She meets Christian and it turns out he has secrets of his own.  As the book progresses, she starts to realize the need to learn how to use her powers.  Devastating events take place and she is forced to learn things quickly about herself and who the Auras really are.

As much as I enjoyed the first book, the next two were even more entertaining.  They all are so full of surprises and twists, that I had to go back and read many scenes to relive it all.  There is action at every turn and so many twists.  One I saw coming, but others were so surprising.  I loved how the author grew her characters, especially Llona.  She is awesome.  Start with Book 1 when you read this series and keep going until the end!

LDSWBR: What book or movie reminds you of summer?

SARAH: “The Last Unicorn” reminds me of summer because we used to watch it everyday during the summer, then go outside and recruit the neighbor kids to act out all the scenes with us.

LDSWBR: Do you hike during the summer? If so, where is your favorite place to hike?

SARAH: I only hike when I’m forced to hike. I love being in the mountains, but it’s hard to enjoy the scenery when my legs are protesting every step. I have very whiny legs.

LDSWBR: What is the best book you’ve read so far this year?

SARAH: That’s a tough one. Either “The Fault in Our Stars” by John Green or “Fangirl” by Rainbow Rowell.

LDSWBR: Thanks, Sarah!

My Review:

I really liked the first book in this series called, A Change of Plans. There was a little of everything, adventure, romance, and angst. Torn Canvas has all of that too. Right now I want to say, please read the first book in the series. This second book will make so much more sense. Also, it will help the reader understand why main character, Jori, is going through what he is. It also was great to have a bond with the characters because of reading the first book.

I was happy to get to know Jori better. In the first book he sometimes came across as a shallow, ladies man. There is so much more to his character than that. It was great to go along on this journey of physical and emotional renewal with Jori. Donna does a wonderful job with her characters. I also loved getting to know Olivia. There was so much more depth to her as the story went along.

Torn Canvas will take you on an emotional journey where you will feel the satisfaction of seeing people grow and learn to love. I recommend this story to lovers of romance.

LDSWBR: What book or movie reminds you of summer?

JENNIFER: The first one that comes to mind is the unabridged Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. I know that’s a weird summer book, but I read it the summer after I graduated from high school. Everything we did that summer, I had that book with me. I read it on the beach, I read it driving in the car to family reunions, I read it when I was supposed to be weeding the garden…you get the idea. I’m usually a fast reader, but it took me the majority of the summer to make it through all 1463 pages. That book changed the way I thought about lots of things and I realized that everything is not always black or white, that choices truly have consequences, and that our experiences do shape the way we view the world and everything in it. I think about that at the beginning of every summer.

LDSWBR: Do you hike during the summer? If so, where is your favorite place to hike?

JENNIFER: Yes! Since moving to Boise, we’ve had to search out new places to hike. One of our favorites is to hike Table Rock. It’s a bit steep, but when you get to the top, you can see the entire city of Boise. It’s beautiful! We’ve also done some hiking in McCall this year, and that’s been great.

LDSWBR: What is the best book you’ve read so far this year?

JENNIFER: My favorite book that I’ve read so far this year is Popular by Maya Van Wagenen. It’s a memoir of how Maya, an eighth grade self-proclaimed geek, used a 1950s popularity guide to explore what ‘popular’ really means. It was so touching, and Maya’s experiences are applicable to women of every age. When I finished it, I had my daughter (who will be starting junior high this fall) read it as well. She loved it, too!

LDSWBR: Thank you, Jennifer!
