20 Days until Christmas!

Today, LDSWBR presents two talented mystery-suspense authors, G.G. Vandagriff & Ronda Gibb Hinrichsen. Both of these lovely ladies have generously donated one of their books for our drawing. Enjoy, and don’t forget to comment!

*****************************

G.G. Vandagriff is the author of eight books. Her most recent published works include: The Last Waltz and Hidden Branch. G.G. is currently working on two books: Embracing Abundance (Summer 2010) and The Crazy Ladies of Oakwood: Vol. 1- Escapade in Tuscany (Fall 2010).

G.G.’s books can be purchased online at www.deseretbook.com, www.seagullbook.com and www.barnesandnoble.com, or in stores at Deseret Book, Seagull Book, and Barnes & Nobles’s Utah locations. You can also purchase her books through the links on G.G.’s website: ggvandagriff.com.

Read more about G.G. on her blog: Writer in the Cranberry Tower.

LDSWBR: G.G., what favorite holiday traditions do you participate in every year? Will you be starting any new traditions?

G.G.: Because of the abundance of sugar goodies, I like to give away baskets of fresh California oranges to my neighbors, visiting teachers, etc. This year I will be giving copies of The Last Waltz, to the ladies I visit teach. As far as traditions go, we are in the middle of a transition. I have one daughter married with one child. She spends Christmas Eve with her in-laws. We have tried various strategies to replace our activities when the kids were young. This year, my two sons (24, 32) will be helping David and me to put together a challenging puzzle of Mary and Jesus by the artist Raphael that I bought in Florence. We will feast on breads, cheese, and cold cuts.

Christmas Day is primarily about Jack (my grandson). My youngest son (Greg, 24) is stuck being the Christmas Elf until Jack can read the tags on the gifts. He passes out one gift at a time and everyone watches as its opened. We always have a honey-baked ham for dinner. Since my son-in-law joined the family, he makes Rotkohl (German red cabbage casserole). Everthing else is “on demand” and is usually made by my daughter, a gourmet cook. However, this year she is pregnant and may not feel like cooking!

LDSWBR: What books are on your Christmas wish list?

G.G.: The Joseph Smith Papers, Vol. 2, and the new Reflections of Christ. Deseret Book already gave me another book I wanted- Jehovah and the World of the Old Testament. It is positively awesome!

LDSWBR: What books do you plan on purchasing/have you purchased as gifts for loved ones this Christmas? (Don’t ruin any surprises!)

G.G.: My husband’s book, I Need Thee Every Hour: The Atonement in Everyday Life (Covenant), is supposedly going to be coming out in December. It is about using the atonement as a tool in daily life. We will be giving that book to everyone on our list. (Author: David P. Vandagriff)

LDSWBR: We’ll keep an eye out for your husband’s new book. Thanks for sharing with us, G.G.!

Author Ronda Gibb Hinrichsen released her first novel, MISSING, in October 2009. MISSING can be purchased online at www.amazon.com, as well as Deseret Book, and Barnes & Noble.

To learn more about Ronda, visit her website: www.rondahinrichsen.com and her two blogs: Ronda Gibb Hinrichsen & The Write Blocks.

LDSWBR: Ronda, what favorite holiday traditions do you and your family participate in each year, and will you be adding any new traditions this year?

RONDA: Our family traditions seem to change as our children grow up, but two traditions I absolutely can’t do without are to listen to my favorite Christmas music, especially Handel’s Messiah, and to watch the movie “It’s a Wonderful Life.” One of my favorite traditions from years past, though, was the name drawing and exchange of “gag” gifts; i.e., silly things that made everyone laugh. The best gag gift I ever gave, in my opinion, was a coffee mug shaped like a toilet. I included a package of toilet paper in the gift. That gift got passed on over the years. My father even kept the mug in his office at work for a time.

LDSWBR: That’s a great story! Tell us, what books are on your Christmas wish list?

RONDA: Any book by an LDS author would be great. I love to get them, read them, and study how their authors created each scene, emotion, and reader reaction. I also really want an inexpensive copy of “Little Women.” I only had the Reader’s Digest condensed version when I was a kid, but I read it more than a dozen times. I think it’s about time I read the entire thing.

LDSWBR: What books do you plan on purchasing/have you purchased as gifts this Christmas? (Don’t spoil any surprises, though!)

RONDA: I have a daughter and other family members who love to read, so I’ve definitely purchased books as Christmas gifts. But I’d rather not reveal the titles here. Curious eyes always have a way of finding out what I’d rather keep hidden. :)

LDSWBR: Yes, they do. Thanks, Ronda!

21 Days until Christmas!

Heather (H.B.) Moore has published seven books, including the four-part Out of Jerusalem series. Her most recent releases include Alma, sequel to her novel Abinadi, and All is Bright: A Collection of True Christmas Stories. Her next book, Alma the Younger, is planned for a tentative Fall 2010 release. Heather is also working on Women of the Book of Mormon, with a tentative release sometime in 2010.

Heather’s books may be purchased at www.deseretbook.com, www.seagullbook.com, or in LDS bookstores.

More about Heather: Heather Moore is the award-winning author of the historical series, Out of Jerusalem, and writes under the pen name H.B. Moore. The next series begins with Abinadi, which won both the 2008 Whitney for Best Historical and the 2009 Best of State in Literary Arts; its sequel Alma was recently released by Covenant Communications. Heather graduated from Brigham Young University with a major in Fashion Merchandising and minor in Business Management—which has nothing to do with writing novels. But at least she can balance a mean checkbook and color-coordinate her kids’ school clothes. Heather loves to hear from readers at: www.hbmoore.com or if you’re an aspiring writer, she also manages the editing company: www.precisioneditinggroup.com.

Visit Heather on her blog: My Writer’s Lair

LDSWBR: Heather, what favorite Holiday traditions do you and your family participate in every year? Will you be starting any new traditions this year?

HEATHER: Christmas Eve is my favorite time of the Christmas season. We have a crab dinner with my family and re-enact the Christmas story, in one form or another. My dad reads the story of Christ’s birth out of the Book of Luke to the grandchildren. This year my parents are in Jerusalem, so we’ll have to carry on the tradition with our own little family.

LDSWBR: What books are on your Christmas wish list?

HEATHER: I deserve a lump of coal—I’ve already purchased or borrowed the books on my wish list. I’m impatient! For a list of clean books I’ve read this year, check out my blog post: Whitney Nominations and 2 more reviews.

LDSWBR: What books do you plan on purchasing/have you purchased as gifts for loved ones this Christmas?

HEATHER: The Christmas List, by Richard Paul Evans; Farworld 2: Land Keep, by J. Scott Savage; My Fair Godmother, by Janette Rallison

LDSWBR: Thanks for sharing your traditions with us, Heather.

Visit Michele on her website: www.micheleashmanbell.com and her blog: Michele Ashman Bell.

LDSWBR: What favorite holiday traditions do you and your family participate in every year? Will you be starting any new traditions this year?

MICHELE: Every Christmas Eve we watch a Christmas movie together as a family, either a new one at the theaters or a family favorite at home. We come home and the kids put all the presents under the tree (I keep them hidden up until this point). This totally gets them excited for Christmas morning. Then, before bed, the kids get to open one gift. It is usually a pair of pajamas. Finally, we get out the white Christmas stocking that hangs by the other stockings and pull out the cards we filled out the previous year. On these cards we’ve written what our gift to Christ will be for the year. We review how we’ve done through the year, then make out a new card with our gift for the upcoming year.

LDSWBR: What books are on your Christmas wish list?

MICHELE: Christmas for a Dollar by Gale Sears, In Search of the Christmas Spirit by President Monson, An Angel on Main Street by Kathi Oram Peterson

LDSWBR: What books do you plan on purchasing/have you purchased as gifts for loved ones this Christmas? (Unless sharing would ruin the surprise!)

MICHELE: I am giving Christmas for a Dollar to my neighbors and visiting teaching ladies this year. It is such a special story. I also will give out copies of An Angel on Main Street.

LDSWBR: Sounds like you’re a very nice neighbor, Michele. Thanks!

I love the idea of the white stocking and giving gifts to Jesus Christ for the year. Does anyone do something similar to this?

23 Days until Christmas!

Rebecca Talley is the author of three novels, including Altared Plans, her most recent release.

Altared Plans is available online at Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com and www.CedarFort.com, as well as Seagull Book and LDS Bookstores.

Learn more about Rebecca on her website: www.rebeccatalley.com and her blog: Rebecca Talley.

LDSWBR: Rebecca, tell us, what favorite holiday traditions do you and/or your family participate in every year, and will you be starting any new traditions this year?

REBECCA: The day after Thanksgiving we have the Talley Family Hulapalooza. We set up our tree, decorate it, decorate the house and yard, and then have hot chocolate, popcorn, and watch “Christmas Vacation” (an edited version that’s family friendly). We used to have an accidental family tradition of driving into the garage with the tree on top of the vehicle so it was then wedged between the car and the garage door, but we dispensed with that tradition when we decided to save trees by purchasing an artificial tree (just wish the fake tree smelled as good as the real thing).

We make goodies and go Christmas caroling to our neighbors and friends every year.

We watch “It’s a Wonderful Life” every year and I cry every year when it’s over.

We choose a family to secret Santa each year and we almost always get caught on delivery. We’re just not that sneaky.

Every night in December, until December 24th, we read a scripture, sing a Christmas carol, and then read a Christmas story. On Christmas Eve we read the account in Luke. Our children perform a play for us complete with singing and costumes (a tradition my sister and I started when we were young and performed for our grandparents). We then have a visit from one of Santa’s helpers who dresses just like Santa and delivers Christmas Eve gifts (our kids draw names and then make, or purchase, a gift for that person which we place under a Christmas Eve tree–these are the gifts that Santa delivers in person). After Santa’s visit we read a children’s Christmas picture book to all the kids and then it’s off to bed.

On Christmas morning, the kids wait outside our bedroom door at 5:00 am and whisper so loudly they always wake us up even though we’ve already stated that they weren’t allowed to get up until 6:00 (it’s a tradition because it happens every single year and we, the parents, always lose). We have a big family dinner with my sister’s family (she also has 10 kids) on Christmas day and play the same music our grandpa played all while we were growing up.

LDSWBR: What books are on your Christmas wish list?

REBECCA: The Ball’s in Her Court, The Last Waltz, Eyes Like Mine, English Trifle, The Hourglass Door, An Angel on Main Street, Santa Maybe, Mormon Mishaps, Wings, All the Stars in Heaven, Shudder

LDSWBR: Wow, nice wish list! What books do you plan on purchasing/have you purchased as gifts for loved ones this Christmas? (Unless sharing would ruin the surprise for someone- we wouldn’t want that to happen!)

REBECCA: The Joseph Smith Papers, Mormons and Masons, Charley Bones, Flat Stanley, Eager, and numerous other children’s books that I can’t remember because I’ve already wrapped them.

LDSWBR: Thanks, Rebecca!

Listen to our podcast with Rebecca Talley on www.ldswomensbookreview.com!

I love Rebecca’s “tradition” of driving into the garage with the Christmas tree strapped on top of the car. Do you have a funny Christmas tree story or tradition?

24 Days until Christmas!

Time for our first Countdown to Christmas 2009 author post!

Annette Lyon is the author of six novels and
one self-published grammar book. Her most recently published works are: Tower of Strength (March 2009), There, Their, They’re: A No-Tears Guide to Grammar from the Word Nerd (May 2009), and All is Bright: A Compilation of True Christmas Short Stories (available NOW).

Annette’s upcoming releases include: Band of Sisters (coming March 2010) and a chocolate cookbook, as yet untitled, to be released in 2010. To learn more about Annette, visit her website: http://annettelyon.com and her blog: The Lyon’s Tale.

L
DSWBR: Annette, what favorite holiday traditions do you and/or your family participate in every year, and will you be starting any new traditions this year?

ANNETTE: My mother is Finnish, and my family lived in Finland when I was 10-13, so Finland is very dear to my heart. I grew up with a traditional Finnish sweet bread as part of our family’s Christmas season, and I’ve carried that on with my children. It’s called pulla, and it’s flavored with cardamom. (Just the smell of the spice is enough to make my eyes glaze over.)

The great part is that for my children, it’s not Christmas season until we’ve made pulla braids. They love making them AND eating them!

Another big tradition is playing Bing Crosby music and watching the movie White Christmas. As far as I’m concerned, it’s not Christmas until I hear Bing singing. He’s from my dad’s generation, and when I hear his voice, I can hear my dad singing along in my head.

LDSWBR: What books are on your Christmas wish list?

ANNETTE: For years, I’ve been meaning to finish reading the trilogy about the black Saints. I’ve read the first two of the Standing on the Promises Series, but I’d love to get The Last Mile of the Way, by Young and Gray. The first two in the series were excellent.

I’m also an OED (Oxford English Dictionary) nut, and I’ve heard that Reading the OED by Ammon Shea is a great read.

I read tons of LDS fiction all the time, so for the most part, there isn’t a lot of that on my wish list right now–I’ve already gotten that taken care of pretty well!

LDSWBR: What books do you plan on purchasing/have you purchased as gifts for loved ones this Christmas? (Unless sharing would ruin the surprise for someone- we wouldn’t want that to happen!)
ANNETTE: Another tradition we have in our family is always giving the kids a book from Mom and Dad on Christmas Eve, so they’ll each get one from us. I’m assuming they won’t be reading this . . .

My son has asked for the next Alex Rider book Alligator Tears, by Anthony Horowitz, which was just released. (Alex Rider is sort of a teenage James Bond–my son loves those books.)

My 12-yr-old daughter will be getting Shannon Hales’ Book of a Thousand Days (which I LOVED).

Next daughter down requested the one Dear Dumb Diary book she doesn’t own yet.

And I haven’t quite decided what book my youngest (age 7) will get.

I’m sure I’ll buy more books for loved ones, but that’s what’s on the list so far!

LDSWBR: Thank you so much, Annette!

Listen to our podcast with Annette Lyon on www.ldswomensbookreview.com!

Annette’s pulla braids look delicious! My family enjoys my mom’s Cinnamon Pull-Aparts every Christmas morning. What traditional breads do you make every Christmas?
