LDSWBR: What Christmas-related activity would you like to do this year that you have never done before?

DM: I have given some thought to volunteering time at a homeless shelter/food kitchen. My sister has done this at Thanksgiving time, and says she was amazed at what a spiritually rewarding experience it is.

LDSWBR: If you could find one book under the tree this year, what would it be?

DM: I was impressed to learn at a recent fireside of BYU Professor Royal Skousen’s research work on Joseph Smith’s original manuscript and printer’s manuscript of the Book of Mormon. Skousen’s edition (published by Yale University Press) of The Book of Mormon – The Earliest Text documents about 600 corrections to our current Book of Mormon, many of which affect meaning. I would love to have a copy of this edition, considered the closest version to Joseph Smith’s original manuscript, as a cross-reference for my scriptures.

LDSWBR: What is your favorite childhood Christmas memory?

DM: My favorite Christmas memory is of two blown-glass “Santa” Christmas tree lights. When I was a toddler, my parents purchased a strand of lights containing two glass Santa-shaped light bulbs. Year after year, our Christmas tree was extra special because of those unique lights. We never saw replacement bulbs like them. So, after so many years of replacing all the other bulbs on that strand, we began to worry that the Santa lights would burn out and we wouldn’t be able to replace them. They had really become an important part of our annual celebration!

Each year, when we got out the Christmas decorations, we watched and worried to see if those Santa lights would work. Somehow, we felt that if those Santa lights didn’t light up, Christmas would not be the same. Well, those unique Santa lights burned year after year for more than twenty years. It wasn’t until a few years after I had moved away from home as an adult that I learned of the Santa lights finally burning out. I consider it a special Christmas miracle that those lights brightened every year of my childhood Christmas memories.

LDSWBR: How amazing that the Santa lights lasted so long! Thank you, D.M. Merry Christmas!

Betsy Love is a stubborn gal from a long line of stubborn women. Don’t ever tell this Pioneer descendant it can’t be done, or she just may try to prove you wrong–provided she’s not too tired. After all, she did raise 8 teenagers, no small task when you consider most of them were rowdy boys. Betsy loves to write. It’s her passion. If she’s not at her keyboard pounding out her latest story, she is plotting her next one, or in deep conversation with one of her characters. As a former high school English/theater teacher, Betsy uses her knowledge of writing and drama to create tales for both youth and adults. Her greatest inspiration and cheerleader is her husband of almost 35 years. She is the proud grandmother of 14 of the most adorable grandkids anywhere. LDSWBR: What Christmas-related activity would you like to do this year that you have never done before?

BETSY: If money were no object, I’d love to travel with my family to the Holy Land to see the birthplace of my Savior. But since we know that authors don’t make a whole lot, then I’d like to visit every house on my street bearing a Christmas goody and sing a well harmonized Christmas Carol. Okay, it’s probably more of a fantasy than reality. I have great singers in my family, just getting them to sing together–well, one can still dream. I think I just have the plot for my Christmas story!

LDSWBR: If you could find one book under the tree this year, what would it be?

BETSY: The Book of Mormon for Latter-Day Saint Families. (I’d like the whole set, but if it could only be one book, then this would be it.)

LDSWBR: What is your favorite childhood Christmas memory?

BETSY: When I was four, my mother was divorced and we lived with my Aunt Betty in the house my grandfather built. We were very poor, and I don’t know how my mother managed to provide for us, let alone purchase Christmas gifts. One morning, my brother and I were being particularly ornery. The phone rang and Mother said that Santa Clause was on the phone. Of course, we were delighted. Santa asked us if we were being good. You know that pillow that says, “Dear Santa, I can explain…” That was me at that moment.

I don’t remember the conversation well, but I do remember asking him for a Chatty Patty. It had a pull string and said five or six phrases. I promised to be good. And I tried as hard as my four-year-old self could try. I’m sure Mother reminded me frequently of my promise to Santa. Christmas morning arrived, and there was my doll. That’s not the best part of what happened though.

A couple of weeks later I could not find my doll anywhere. Mother told me that Patty had run away from home because I had not taken good care of her and left her outside. Patty was afraid some mean girl would steal her and not treat her nice like I did, so she ran away to find another sweet girl. I cried and cried. I must have cried for days thinking about my doll. You can imagine my delight when a week or so later my mother said, “Look who came back?” Mother held my Chatty Patty. As she handed her to me, Mother said, “She couldn’t find another girl as sweet as you.”

LDSWBR: Thank you for sharing that memory with us. Merry Christmas to you and your family!

18 days until Christmas

Lani Woodland has been an avid reader since elementary school when she first discovered the Babysitters Club and Sweet Valley Twins series. In sixth grade she began writing plays and recruiting (with force when necessary) her friends to act them out. Most of these early works were inspired by She-Ra, the epitome of girl power to her young self.

She graduated from BYU with a BS in Family Science. Lani has always loved scary stories, and has a hard time enjoying any book without at least a little romance in it. She lives in Southern California with her husband, their two children and a large collection of board games. She has worked as a spot-welder, babysitter, janitor, photographer, gymnastics coach, and movie extra. She enjoys bonfires at the beach, hole-in-the-wall restaurants, speed talking, chocolate as a cure-all, and the word “precisely.”

LDSWBR: What Christmas-related activity would you like to do this year that you have never done before?

LANI: I can honestly say that nothing comes to mind. I have done everything I have wanted to at least once. I have gone ice-skating, sledding, built a snowman, seen the Rockettes’ Christmas show, and ridden on the polar express. I do like the idea of hiking in the woods and chopping down my own Christmas tree in theory. But in reality I know I would be too cold. ☺ I just want to be able to spend lots of time with my family.

LDSWBR: If you could find one book under the tree this year, what would it be?

LANI: I really want two books. I want Hunting Lila and Obsidian. I also want a gift card to Amazon to buy books for my Kindle.

LDSWBR: What is your favorite childhood Christmas memory?

LANI: I remember Santa coming to our house Christmas Eve. My grandpa had just gone to bed. Then there was this loud sound of jingling bells, and Santa walked into our living room. I was so excited to see him. When I noticed his watch, I told him my Grandpa had one just like it. It made everyone laugh, but I had no idea why at the time.

LDSWBR: Thank you, Lani. Merry Christmas!

LDSWBR: What Christmas-related activity would you like to do this year that you have never done before?

JULIE: Besides finding a feasible solution to solving the world’s problems, including, but not limited to, poverty, the national debt and developing sustainable alternative energy, I’ve often dreamed of going to Karlovy Vary like Queen Latifah did in Last Holiday. I know this might sound a little trite, but every time I see that movie, I imagine how wonderful it would be to spend the holidays in a European mountain city. Is it just me or does eating gourmet food, relaxing in a spa, and strolling along a snowy river or cobblestoned street wearing a puffy coat, fur hat and boots sound like heaven?

LDSWBR: If you could find one book under the tree this year, what would it be?

JULIE: Oh, just about any book would send my heart drumming with excitement. I enjoy both giving, and receiving, novels of any kind. But if I had to choose one that would cause me to squeal with excitement, it would be Kristin Hannah’s, not yet released, Home Front, or any of her other novels I don’t already own. I’ve also fantasized about indulging in a Jodi Picoult marathon/read-a-thon where I start with her first novel and work my way through to her most recent (except Sing You Home. I didn’t like that one). Only finding every one of her books under the tree would likely leave little room for anyone else’s gifts ;)

LDSWBR: What is your favorite childhood Christmas memory?

JULIE: Wow, that’s a hard question. It’s been a while since I was a child, physically at least. Mentally, well that’s debatable, so maybe I’ll just stick to a more recent memory. Last fall my husband was in a fairly serious motorcycle accident that resulted in a ten day hospital stay where he underwent surgery to repair a dislocated knee after which he suffered a minor heart attack. Not long after, he had a stroke that left him unable to speak except for a few words in Spanish (don’t ask).

By the time mid- December rolled around, thankfully, he was back on his feet, speaking English, and out of town on a business trip. That Sunday evening, my daughters and I looked out the window to see it was snowing big white flakes. Feeling overly festive, we donned coats, hats and boots, retrieved a gift from under the tree and set out through the snow for my in-laws house down the street to spread some of our holiday cheer. (In case you were wondering, I consider their close proximity both a blessing and curse, but that’s a subject for another time.)

After a short visit with the in-laws—they were not as enthusiastic about the snow as we were—we headed back. On the way home, the neighborhood was so quiet that all we could hear was the crunch of our boots in the snow and the three of us paused a moment to enjoy the silence. From the blanketed sky, snowflakes fluttered down upon us like we’d been transported into a snow globe. In our wake, we saw only our footprints fading into a clean blanket of snow. For the first time in months I was truly at peace. The whole scene was a metaphor for the season. Magically, old trials are washed away, replaced by a new hope that begins with the miracle of Christ’s birth. Sharing that moment with my girls, for now anyway, is my favorite Christmas memory.

LDSWBR: Wow. Thank you for sharing that powerful memory, Julie. Merry Christmas to you and your family!

LDSWBR: What Christmas-related activity would you like to do this year that you have never done before?

MELISSA: I would love to go on a vacation for Christmas rather than give presents. Especially if that vacation involves a warm beach in Mexico or a cozy cabin in the Swiss Alps. So much of Christmas is meaningless; being somewhere isolated with nothing but the people I love most sounds like a real Christmas celebration.

LDSWBR: If you could find one book under the tree this year, what would it be?

MELISSA: I’d love a first edition collection of Charles Dickens’ books. It’d be even cooler if they were delivered by Charles Dickens’ ghost, or maybe Scrooge’s. If I had to choose just one, it would be a first edition of A Tale of Two Cities.

LDSWBR: What is your favorite childhood Christmas memory?

MELISSA: We had a horse pasture and every so often we actually had a horse in it. I remember my dad taking me out for a ride one Christmas morning and that was far better than presents. When my siblings and I were older we would always camp out in somebody’s bedroom on Christmas Eve and that brought a lot of fun memories as well as a tight bond before we all started moving out of the house. We went sledding at night when the moon reflecting on the snow created a place between night and day. My most memorable Christmases have come when my focus was on giving to others of my time and especially if they were people in great need.

LDSWBR: Thank you, Melissa. Have a wonderful Christmas!
