Goodreads Summary

What happened after Cinderella married her prince? How did the evil sorceress in Sleeping Beauty turn evil in the first place? Discover these stories and a world filled with magic, forbidden love, elves, sprites, dragons, and the most powerful creatures of all— the fairies —in Bonded, a collection of three fairy tale inspired novellas.

CINDERS: A Cinderella sequel. Money can’t buy love, but magic isn’t a sure bet either. Cinderella, now officially a princess, finds royal life is not what she once dreamed. When a mysterious elf from her past stirs up long-suppressed passion, Cinderella begins to wonder if there really is love beneath the spell that captured her husband’s heart. But undoing magic can be harder than casting the initial spell, and the results are even less predictable.

THIRDS: A retelling of the Grimm’s fairy tale, One-Eye, Two-Eyes, Three-Eyes. Issina is surrounded by magic, yet none of it belongs to her. Despised and abused by her mother and sisters, she finds comfort when she meets the beautiful elves living in the nearby woods. The elves want to help her discover her own magic, but it’s not the kind of power she hoped for, and she learns there is more to magic than getting what you want.

SCALES: A Sleeping Beauty prequel. The sun never sets in the realm of the fairies. When the young fairy Serina looks into her sister’s eyes, she sees darkness for the first time. After her mother is murdered, Serina defies fairy law to follow her sister to the human realm. There she discovers the strength of a bond, the weight of a promise, and the darkness in her own heart.

My Review

I really enjoyed these three novellas by Michelle Davidson Argyle.  Each were very well-written and I was taken into the different story immediately.  Ever since I was a little girl, I have been fascinated with fairytales.  I would spend hours in my room reading.  Aurora from Sleeping Beauty is my all-time favorite, and so I was excited to read Scales.  But, if I had to pick a favorite (and it was really hard) it would be Cinders.  Cinderella’s (Christina’s) story was fascinating to me.  What if happily ever after isn’t enough?  The guilt of using magic to win her prince really weighed on Cinderella’s heart.  Did her prince really love her?  How Cinderella finds the truth, and the events that take place are actually heart breaking, but I really liked where Michelle took the story, and teaches that not all stories have a happy ending.

4 out of 5 stars.  I want to thank Michelle for the chance to read and review these amazing stories.  The settings and characters immediately draw you in.  Once you start Bonded, you won’t stop until you’re done.  Michelle is also the author of The Breakaway, which is on my review list.  The sequel Pieces just came out! Check out all of Michelle’s titles, including Monarch.

Goodreads Summary

Two kingdoms, two goals.

The king of Relavia is determined to wipe out his warring neighbors in Paridzule, a worthy adversary for over five hundred years. News of an arranged marriage between his son and the daughter of his lifelong enemy has fueled the temper of Relavia’s tyrannical king. What he doesn’t realize is the true measure of his son’s honor and how far he is willing to go to gain peace.

Mindy’s Review

Shadow of the Rose, is a very enjoyable story.  However, at times in the beginning, I struggled with names I couldn’t pronounce, phrases repeating, and too much introduced all at once, but I liked the characters and the story is engaging once I read further and got into it more.  There are many characters to keep track of, but the two I enjoyed the most were Black Rose, and Nightshadow.  They were both very intriguing and Nightshadow especially, was awesome.  She was raised as an assassin, and the events of the book have her changing her mind about her upbringing.  I also thought  Farrehn was a great character, for a half-ogre.

3 1/2 out of 5 stars.  The different story lines did keep my interest, and the book reads at a quick pace.  There is a cliff-hanger ending, and I’m excited to see what happens next.

Sheila’s Review

Adversarius: Shadow of the Rose(Book One) is a High Fantasy novel with a lot of action and a lot of characters. At first, I had a hard time keeping track of all of the many different characters and their names. After that was figured out, it was more of a smooth read for me. There are many characters that would vie for status as “main” characters because you have several story-lines going on in this novel. Some of my favorites would have to be Nightshadow, the woman assassin, and the priest named Rose( there is nothing feminine about him!) They had some of the best lines and plots in the book.  Of course the evil villain, the King of Relavia, Li’endrin,is about as bad as bad gets. I didn’t see any goodness in him at all. Anyone that did what he did, to his own children, is an awful creature. Speaking of creatures, there were many different kinds in the story, including dragons and ogres.I really did like the half-ogre, Farrehn. He made me laugh a lot, and really did have a good heart.
There is a lot to like about this first novel, by Author M.L. Chesley. If you don’t get distracted by the strange names and the many characters, you will find a good fantasy that will keep you involved. Be ready for a cliff-hanger at the end, which will leave you itching for book #2 in the series.

Summary

Seventeen-year-old Ismae escapes from the brutality of an arranged marriage into the sanctuary of the convent of St. Mortain, where the sisters still serve the gods of old. Here she learns that the god of Death Himself has blessed her with dangerous gifts—and a violent destiny. If she chooses to stay at the convent, she will be trained as an assassin and serve as a handmaiden to Death. To claim her new life, she must destroy the lives of others.

Ismae’s most important assignment takes her straight into the high court of Brittany—where she finds herself woefully under prepared—not only for the deadly games of intrigue and treason, but for the impossible choices she must make. For how can she deliver Death’s vengeance upon a target who, against her will, has stolen her heart?

First Line

“I bear a deep red stain that runs from my left shoulder down to my right hip, a trail left by the herbwitch’s poison that my mother used to try to expel me from her womb.”

Review

I can honestly say I’ve never read a book quite like Grave Mercy. Despite being well over 500 pages long, I read it quickly, drawn in and fascinated by the dark story of Ismae and her training as an assassin. Like the series name (His Fair Assassin) suggests, there a number of darker elements revolving around treachery, death, and warfare.

I felt for Ismae and everything she had suffered in her life. I liked seeing her character gain wisdom through experience and become more trusting of her instincts. While I was intrigued by Ismae and her ability to overcome death, I really liked Gavriel Duval. The contrast between these two characters taking different approaches to reach a similar end created conflict that added interest to their growing attraction to each other.

The historic setting and “serving” of various saints (formerly worshiped as “gods”) made me curious to learn more about the time period. I wanted to know if these were actual beliefs and places or a result of world-building by the author.

Ismae and Gavriel Duval were not the only well-drawn characters in the book. There were a a number of side characters with depth and history. The scenes involving de Lornay and the Beast were fun to read. I became just as devoted to the young duchess-to-be as the other characters, and my heart broke for her during one particular part of the book.

The villains are despicable and the intrigues are many. There was one twist I saw coming early on, but that didn’t ruin anything for me. Instead it kept me reading to see when the other characters would figure it out.

While Grave Mercy is technically YA, because of some of the darker themes I would personally consider it more adult. The next book, Dark Triumph, is scheduled to be released in Spring 2013. I will probably read the sequel eventually as I am curious about what is going on with that character’s assignment and situation, especially in regard to how her story intersects with Ismae’s in Grave Mercy.

Content Warning

  • a few instances of swearing (heck, dang)
  • mature themes of death, murder, espionage & serving Mortain, the saint/god of Death, as well as discussion of methods and tools for killing
  • mention of a man’s “member,” talk of rougeing certain parts of a woman’s upper-body anatomy, “womanly charms” (innuendo)
  • Ismae must pose as Gavriel’s mistress for the mission, so he visits her room at night to maintain the illusion but sleeps in a chair
  • there is one part near the end where two characters lie together in dire circumstances but there are no details given and whether or not “something” actually happens isn’t discussed.

First Line

“This isn’t an ordinary ‘Once upon a time…'”

Review

The Enchanted Truth is a quick read that ended a little differently than I expected, but I’m actually happy about that. Touted as a good book to give as a gift, at only 40 pages long The Enchanted Truth is a quick read. I enjoyed the story in general and appreciated its message to women of all ages.

The book kept me engaged for the duration, though the constant alliteration and ever-changing descriptors for each character became a bit distracting after a while. Phrases such as “anxious aristocrat” and “glowing guest” were cute at first, but got old after awhile. Still, it wasn’t enough to make me stop reading and the overall message is a good one.

Goodreads Summary: “Three hundred years after the events of the Mistborn trilogy, Scadrial is now on the verge of modernity, with railroads to supplement the canals, electric lighting in the streets and the homes of the wealthy, and the first steel-framed skyscrapers racing for the clouds.

Kelsier, Vin, Elend, Sazed, Spook, and the rest are now part of history—or religion. Yet even as science and technology are reaching new heights, the old magics of Allomancy and Feruchemy continue to play a role in this reborn world. Out in the frontier lands known as the Roughs, they are crucial tools for the brave men and women attempting to establish order and justice.

One such is Waxillium Ladrian, a rare Twinborn, who can Push on metals with his Allomancy and use Feruchemy to become lighter or heavier at will. After twenty years in the Roughs, Wax has been forced by family tragedy to return to the metropolis of Elendel. Now he must reluctantly put away his guns and assume the duties and dignity incumbent upon the head of a noble house. Or so he thinks, until he learns the hard way that the mansions and elegant tree-lined streets of the city can be even more dangerous than the dusty plains of the Roughs.”

My Review

I need to get this off my chest right from the start.  I loved this book.  I loved everything about it.  The time-period, the characters (especially Wax, Wayne, and Marasi), the Allomancy, the setting, just basically everything.  This is an amazing book.  I admit I have not read the first three of The Mistborn series yet.  If I weren’t in the throws of Whitney reading, I would be reading them now.  I did have to chat with Sheila to make sure I was understanding all of the Allomancy stuff, and I was.  This world that Brandon has created is beyond cool.  Even just the names of the characters are cool.

Wax is a law keeper, straight from the Roughs.  His family has had a tragedy, and he is summoned home.  He has also suffered recently, and welcomed the change of society life.  If only at an extent.  Months pass, and he is visited by Wayne, a side-kick of his from earlier days.  Things are happening in Elendel that require Wax’s help.  With Wayne at his side, and Marasi, a girl fascinated by the lawkeepers.  He needs to figure out why events are unfolding the way they are before lives are lost.

5 out 5 stars.  There was never a dull moment for me in this book, and the end has a great surprise twist.  Brandon Sanderson is the author of MANY great books.  Find out more about them here.

Smashwords Summary:  “When two vicious wolves chase fourteen-year-old Jacob Clark down a path from our world into another, his life is forever changed. He has no idea they have been sent by the Lorkon—evil, immortal beings who are jealous of powers he doesn’t know he possesses—powers they desire to control.

The inhabitants of the new world desperately need Jacob’s help in recovering a magical key that was stolen by the Lorkon and is somehow linked to him. If he helps them, his life will be at risk. But if he chooses not to help them, both our world and theirs will be in danger. The Lorkon will stop at nothing to unleash the power of the key—and Jacob’s special abilities.”

Jacob Clark is very good at basketball.  He is excited and anxious for try-outs the next day.  Jacob knows he will make the team, and hopes it jump starts an NBA career.  His sister Amberly is playing in the sandbox, and his older brother Matt and him just finished a quick shoot out.  Jacob thinks he saw something in the bushes, but pays it no mind, until Amberly starts screaming.  The boys rush over and see a huge black wolf towering over their little sister.  Jacob takes off after them, while yelling at Matt to get Amberly in the house.  He runs and runs and winds up in a place he doesn’t recognize.  Being chased by weird looking creatures, and meeting strange people is just the start of his journey.  Jacob is asked to find the stolen Key of Kilenya from the evil Lorkon.  He isn’t sure he wants to.  What about his family?  What about his future?  All that won’t matter if the Lorkon use the key for evil purposes.

The Key of Kilenya struck my interest and got me excited about the story from page one.  I appreciate a great fantasy book that I can pass onto my kids without hesitation.  I love this unique world that the author creates.  I also love the inventive character names.  They are clever and imaginative.  My personal favorites were Early and September, little fairy like creatures called Minyas.  Another cool thing about the story is the magic that the Makalos have.  It’s called Rezend, and it can many cool things.  Even Jacob has special powers of his own.  He just needs to figure out what it is, and hopefully before it’s too late.

Along his journey Jacob meets Aloren.  A girl in need of help herself.  Jacob isn’t sure about her when they first meet, and has a very funny discussion with himself about her.

He glanced at Aloren again–she was still smiling.  What could be so interesting and funny it was making her smile still?  Or, maybe her face never relaxed–maybe it was frozen in a smile.  He almost stopped walking as this thought occurred to him.  Maybe she had a muscular disorder that made her face look like that.  Jacob made a mental note to check to see what her face looked like while she was sleeping.  He almost laughed out loud when this thought formed in his mind, realizing how awkward it would be if she woke up with him in her sleeping area.  He could only imagine what he’d say. “Uh, I’m checking to see if you have a muscle problem in your face that makes you smile all the time.”…

4 out of 5 stars.  This book very enjoyable and is an action packed adventure story for all readers.  The Key of Kilenya is available on Smashwords for FREE! Find it here.  The sequel The Ember Gods was released in September of this year.  Find that here.
