Goodreads Summary

Trenton Colman is a creative thirteen-year-old boy with a knack for all things mechanical. But his talents are viewed with suspicion in Cove, a steam-powered city built inside a mountain. In Cove, creativity is a crime and “invention” is a curse word.

Kallista Babbage is a repair technician and daughter of the notorious Leo Babbage, whose father died in an explosion—an event the leaders of Cove point to as an example of the danger of creativity.

Working together, Trenton and Kallista learn that Leo Babbage was developing a secret project before he perished. Following clues he left behind, they begin to assemble a strange machine that is unlike anything they’ve ever seen before. They soon discover that what they are building may threaten every truth their city is founded on—and quite possibly their very lives.

My Review

One word: AMAZING!

Okay, that isn’t all I’m going to say, but that word sums up this book perfectly.  I absolutely loved this book.  The imagination and creativity involved in this story is mind-blowing.  I’m not surprised though, Jeff is an extremely talented author who dazzles me every time I read one of his books.  I loved how it was illegal to think outside of the box, to change things, to invent something new.  I won’t get into the history of Cove in my review, but it is fascinating.  Cove is a treasure trove of secrets.  I really liked Trenton.  I think of him as a talented young man with wondrous potential and ingenuity.  Kallista needed to grow on me for a bit, but quickly she won me over too, she’s has a sad history.  Trenton is dealt a major blow early on, and is betrayed by someone close to him, but as the story goes, there are reasons.  I loved the adventure the two take on to solve the mystery of what Kallista’s father left behind.  Can’t wait for book 2, why can’t time go faster?!?

5 out of 5 stars.  This book was a joy to read, another testament as to why I love middle grade fiction so much! Bravo, Jeff!

LDSWBR:  What books do you plan/hope to read this summer?

JEFF:  Anything I can get my hands on! Off the top of my head: The Ocean at the End of the Lane and Doctor Sleep. I’ve just finished an ARC of Lock & Co, Insomnia by Jenn Johansson, the 3rd Beyonders book, and an ARC of The Eye of Minds.

LDSWBR: Did you ever go to summer camp, and/or what is your most memorable camping experience?

JEFF:  My family camped all the time and I also went to Scout camp every year. Most memorable moment is waking up on the 3rd morning of a fifty miler to find the entire scout troop staring at me . . . and the huge skunk that had been climbing back and forth across my sleeping bag.

LDSWBR:  If you could have a summer home anywhere in the world, where would it be?

JEFF:  On a lake in the California redwoods.

LDSWBR:  Thanks, Jeff/J. Scott! ;)

Farworld_Air Keep Bk3

It’s been six months since Marcus and Kyja obtained the help of the land and water elementals, but before they can secure the help from the mysterious air elementals, the two friends must first be reunited. A task easier said than done.

Master Therapass is worried that trying to pull Marcus to Farworld would put him in danger of the shadow realm, but if Marcus stays on Earth, he’ll be sent back to the Philo T. Justice School for Boys instead of being able to stay on the protected grounds of the monastery.

While attempting to return to Farworld, Marcus finds himself in the Abyss of Time, facing four doors: the Is, the Was, the Will Be, and the Never Was. What he learns in that dangerous place has the potential to change his life—and Kyja’s. But does he have the courage to tell her what he learned?

And in Farworld, a drought, floods, and blizzards have seized the land, hinting that perhaps there is a traitor in the elementals’ midst. The Dark Circle is growing in power, and as Marcus and Kyja desperately search for the air elementals, they must first answer the question “Is there anyone we can trust?”

DarkMemories

There are things in the darkness—things much worse than the tracks and abandoned pieces of equipment that trip the children up and gash at their feet and legs—things that brush silently past them, touching their faces before disappearing again.

1977—In the sleepy Town of Twin falls, Colorado, what starts as a carefree school picnic ends in tragedy when six children disappear into an abandoned gold mine. Six enter the dark void—and days later, only five emerge. After an arduous search, the hunt for the last child is called off and the mine entrance is blasted. Little Frankie is left behind, alone in the darkness.

He is coming.

2011—Police Chief Cal Hunt’s investigation into the recent string of bizarre murders in Twin Falls takes a chilling turn when he learns that each of the victims was a survivor of the Seven Stars mine incident. Cal realizes that they share a dark secret—the truth about what happened to Frankie.

To drag them deeper.

With time running out for the remaining survivors, Cal must face a killer that defies all logical explanation. Because no matter how Cal analyzes the facts, there is only one conclusion: A supernatural force is reaching out from the depths to reclaim those who escaped more than thirty years before. And it will not rest until it takes them all . . .

Into the darkness.

Have you ever encountered a skunk?

My Review

In the past few years, it seemed that I asked always Jeff the same question whenever I saw him.  “When is the next Farworld coming out?”  I’m sure he was getting rather sick of me asking, but as a huge fan of the series, how could you blame me?  Naturally, I was ecstatic when I heard the rest of the series was going to be completed.  Air Keep does not disappoint.  It has the same heart and action as the first two books and I really enjoyed how much the characters care about each other.  It has been 6 months since Kyja and Marcus were together.  Kyja and Master Therapass were trying to find a safe way to get Marcus to Farworld.  It was taking too long for Kyja, so she decides to take matter into her own hands.  As you can guess, things don’t go quite as planned.  Something happens to Marcus before Kyja is able to reach him, and he sees something that could change things for both kids.

I loved this book.  It felt like I was visiting old friends.  But, these friends are on a very dangerous journey, while I get to come along with them unscathed.

5 out of 5 stars.  Jeff is the author of many fabulous books.  He has been very busy, and has had three releases in the last six months.  Case File 13: Zombie Kid was released in December of 2012, and Dark Memories in January 2013.

You hold in your hands a very dangerous record.

I have collected every side of the story and every piece of evidence on case number 13. Now, in this file, you will find all you need to follow the dark adventures of Nick, Carter, and Angelo, three boys who possess an unhealthy obsession with monsters, in a town so grisly, so horrific—

Whoa, whoa, whoa. You’re telling it all wrong, dude. You make it sound like it’s a scary story.

Ahem. Well, Nick, it is a scary story. In this volume alone, there are voodoo queens, graveyards—even the dreaded Zombie King himself.

Yeah, but there’s also the part where Angie gets mashed potatoes all in her face, and the part where I use my cool zombie powers to—

All right, point taken. Now, if you don’t mind . . .

You hold in your hands a very dangerous, very funny record, detailing the hilarious adventures of three boys who have an awesome obsession with monsters. This is the first volume. Read on if you dare. . . .
