Goodreads Summary

“You’re a good man, Henry,” Eliza whispered. Their eyes met for a brief moment before, seized by sudden impulse, Eliza closed the distance between them, stood on her tiptoes, and kissed him full on the lips. When she pulled away, Henry stood there, his eyes wide with surprise. He’d kissed back. She was certain of that. He could have pushed her away, and he hadn’t. But the stupefied look on his face didn’t exactly make it easy for her to know what to do next.

After three years of social work in Nashville, Eliza Redding is eager to leave behind her life at home for a new adventure. Nestled deep in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina is the site of her first job as a clinical counselor: Rockbridge Academy, a rehabilitative boarding school for troubled youth. Anticipating that she’ll be the only Latter-day Saint at the academy, Eliza is pleasantly surprised to discover that English teacher Henry Jacobson is a fellow member of the church. Her excitement is quickly diminished, however, when she discovers Henry’s standoffish and cold personality–undeterred, she commences the monumental task of befriending her reserved coworker.

As they face serious familial struggles, Eliza and Henry find themselves drawn together by their growing understanding of each other. But when a life-threatening crisis arises at the academy and family conflicts escalate, will these two independent spirits realize they are meant for each other?

My Review

Jenny Proctor is a great author, and I really enjoyed this book.  I instantly loved Eliza.  She is a fabulous character, and it wasn’t just because she has red hair.  I loved how caring and kind she was.  Henry, on the other hand, was a mystery.  Don’t get me wrong, he is a great guy, but one page I would feel like he made a breakthrough, then the next he would totally shut down.  Henry was kind, but very reserved.  I’m glad he was able to work out his issues before he made his decisions on where he wanted his life to go.  He really had a lot of things to work out.  I can’t say more about him without revealing the whole book, but he is worth the wait.  Eliza had a past too, and I was happy to see how her character advanced as well.  I really felt for these characters and their trails.  Eliza also befriends a co-worker, Flip, who shows interest in the church, but are his motives for doing so the right reasons?  Even if he has motives, I really liked Flip.  Jenny does a great job with all of her characters.

4 out of 5 stars.  This book is written well and once you start, you won’t want to stop until the end.  I liked the point of view switches between Henry and Eliza.  It really helped me get to know them better through each other’s eyes.

jennyproctorJenny Proctor was born in the mountains of Western North Carolina, a place she still resides and considers the loveliest on earth. As a Mom to six kids, it isn’t always easy to find time to write, but Jenny squeezes it in in the early hours of the morning, and long after she should have gone to bed. She hikes to spend time with her family, runs because her love for food requires it, and writes because it keeps her calm in an otherwise crazy world. Jenny’s second novel will be released in August of 2014.

LDSWBR: What is your favorite Christmas song/hymn? Does it have special meaning to you?

JENNY: My favorite Christmas Hymn: I don’t think I could pick just one! I love Far Far Away on Judea’s Plains, because it’s fun to play, and fun to sing. I also really love O Come, All ye Faithful. There’s a song called Welcome to Our World that’s really beautiful, and I love Joseph’s Song, I was Not His Father, from The Forgotten Carols. The meaning behind that song has always been really special to me because it makes me think of the people that knew the Savior not just as Jesus, the Son of God, but as a friend, a son, a neighbor . . . those that lived among Him, and cherished the personal relationships they had with Him.

LDSWBR: Do you get together with friends/family to play board games on Christmas or New Year’s? What games do you like to play? Do you have a favorite game from your childhood?

JENNY: We love to play games at my house, though we’ve never played games on Christmas Eve, or New Years. We’ve been traveling in years past, but this year we’ll be home so playing games on Christmas Eve sounds so fun! We like to play Scrabble and Qwirkle, and Uno. And with the big kids, Ticket to Ride is really fun. I LOVED the game Enchanted Forest when I was a kid, so I bought it for my kids thinking we would have so much fun playing together. What I didn’t remember about my childhood is how LONG the game takes to play. SO yeah. My feelings about that one have changed now that I’ve crossed over to the parent side of game playing.

LDSWBR: If you could recommend only one book from those you read this year, what would it be and why?

JENNY: Only one book? That’s painful. I’m going to cheat and give you a couple different categories. If you have kids, The One and Only Ivan is a beautiful juvenile fiction book that parents and kids should read together. You’ll cry. Your kids will love it. It’s one of my all-time favorites. If you want a beautiful, heartfelt novel, Ka Hancock’s Dancing on Broken Glass is another one I’ll remember forever and reread over and over again. And finally, if you want a simple story with incredible prose, Andrew Sean Greer’s The Story of a Marriage is a lovely read. Multiple times, I felt the need to wake up my husband and read him passages out loud. So, so good.

LDSWBR: Thank you, Jenny!

Review

The House at Rose Creek is a well-written debut novel with a deeper, more layered story than I expected. While it was definitely a love story, the romance was not always front and center. There was a rediscovering of love of home and family as well as a developing love and respect for those who came before. In a way, there was also a retelling of romance past as the main character reads about Ian and Jennie in his journal.

I didn’t really care for Kate at first but she quickly grew on me. I could feel the connection between her and Andrew right away. Andrew was really great, but I’m glad he had a bit of a history to keep things real. The secondary characters had dimension and personality, even if I didn’t like how they reacted some of the time, but that’s what made them more realistic. The situation with Kate’s family was relatable, tense at times and not quickly or easily resolved, but efforts and progress were still made even if everything wasn’t tied up in a pretty bow at the end. There was only one part, the sudden appearance of a former love interest, that felt a bit contrived to me.

I liked how the journal of her ancestor tied into Kate’s story and inspired her, not just in her investigation into the Church but in learning more about her family history. I, too, felt inspired to delve back into my family history. I enjoyed learning about Ian and looked forward to reading each of his journal entries throughout the story.

Readers who like a story with history and a nice romance will enjoy The House at Rose Creek. The writing is clean and easy to read, effectively evoking the emotion of the scene. I hope Jenny is hard at work on her next book because I look forward to reading more from her.
