FTC FYI: free review copy in exchange for an honest review
First line: “Kennedy Campbell was being pulled to the bottom of the Malacca Strait, the water around her suffocating her, stealing her air, making lights dance before her eyes as her body strained for the oxygen that wasn’t there.”
When I read that first line, I felt as if my lungs were straining for air as well. The rest of the first chapter, and much of the book, is just as intense.
Ribbon of Darkness tells the story of Ethan Barak, introduced in a previous book (Dangerous Connections, if I remember correctly), and Kennedy Campbell, a journalist known for courageous reporting. Ethan is MI-6 out for revenge; Kennedy just wants to help her new friends start a new life in Australia away from the refugee camps and return home herself.
Their paths cross at a rundown little bar in Indonesia where both are at the mercy of bad-guy terrorist, Xavier Sattar. Ethan wants in on whatever big plans Xavier has in the works; Kennedy wants out of Xavier’s custody, knowing the longer she remains the less likely it is that she will survive. She hopes Ethan will help her escape, but Ethan walks away, aware that anything he does to help her will lessen his chances of infiltrating Xavier’s organization.
That is the beginning of a page-turning international adventure that involves terrorists, hostages, the Malacca Strait, human-trafficking, bombs, and sacrifice. One thing I really appreciate about Julie’s writing is that she has strong female protagonists. I like it when the heroine isn’t afraid to put up a fight and do some damage to the bad guys.
Julie was also able to capture a lot of emotion with Kennedy. From Kennedy’s relationship with her mom, the concern for her new friends, and a new level of patriotism and duty, I experienced a full range of emotions along with her.
If you like action, suspense, and international intrigue, you will definitely enjoy Ribbon of Darkness.
Ribbon of Darkness played out like a movie in my mind as I read, making for some pretty intense action sequences, especially near the end. I give it 4 stars for suspense that kept me turning pages late into the night.

Shanda’s Review
Bloodborne has everything that makes a suspense novel great. The threat is terrifyingly believable. The protagonists are imperfect and relatable. Close calls and unknown elements keep the reader turning pages. There is the black and white of right and wrong along with plenty of gray in between.
While the story is told mainly from Erin and Sean’s viewpoints, the reader experiences a significant amount through the villains’ points-of-view as well. The story carries smoothly between each character. I love that the reader gets to know one of the nicest characters in the book through the eyes of the main bad guy, who isn’t quite as unfeeling as one might expect.
Because suspense novels are very plot-based, I was not expecting the depth with which Gregg wrote Erin and Sean. Don’t get me wrong, Gregg is great at writing 3-dimensional, believable characters (if you’ve read Blink of an Eye, you know what I’m talking about). Bloodborne went well beyond my expectations, not just with characterization, but with the interaction between the two main characters as well. Erin and Sean’s relationship (don’t assume I mean romance here) is multi-faceted and complex.
I give Bloodborne5 stars. I’m headed straight over to the Whitney Award website to nominate it for the Mystery-Suspense category. Well done, Gregg!

My first thought after reading Gregg Luke’s Bloodborne was, “Move over Dan Brown, Gregg Luke is in the house!!” Gregg has written a novel that plays out like a movie in your head. At times I forgot I was reading a book. The action is great, the suspense is high and the characters keep you wondering who they really are and how they fit into the big picture.
The many storylines in the book seem at first to be disconnected, but soon you can see how all of the pieces start fitting together. The other amazing thing is that the whole story takes place over a period of only four days. There is A LOT that happens in those four days.
Some of the things that intrigued me in Bloodborne were the research done by Dr. Erin Cross, the main female character, the bad guys being members of the Order of Benjamin’s Blood with a Grand Illuminate at the head, and the strange background of the hero, former special ops agent Sean Flannery. Mosquitoes also play a huge part in this story (They also got front cover status!) I didn’t like these insects before and I hate them even more now. My skin kept itching every time I read about Jacob, the “Mad Scientist” breeding his deadly bio-weapon bugs.
I have read most of Gregg’s books and I feel that this book is his best!! He was on fire when he wrote Bloodborne. The storyline is so compelling that you cannot put this book down. I know that you hear this often from reviewers, but it is 100% true when you read Bloodborne. I stayed up late so I could finish this book. I really wanted it to continue and not end. I am wondering if Gregg could get more from this storyline and these characters. I am always impressed with the extensive research Gregg does for his novels. This book is no exception. You can tell he spent a lot of time gathering information.

Mindy’s Review
I was very excited to read this book after talking with Gregg about it at Storymakers. Right away, I was drawn in by the cover. Unfortunately, mosquitos love me. With my red hair and fair skin, I am always the first to get bit. I was very excited to see where this book would take me.
Bloodborne grabbed my attention from the first page. Dr. Erin Cross is at a deli when she receives a threatening text message telling her she is about to die. She looks around the deli wondering if someone there was playing a sick joke. Erin views the number and it is all zero’s, untraceable. Then, another one comes through, and another. She looks around and sees a middle aged, good looking guy, texting. Erin runs over and immediately accuses him of being the guilty sender. At that same moment, a man runs in the deli, guns drawn and shoots up the place. When confronted by Sean, the texter, he pulls out a knife, says some Latin phrases and stabs himself in the neck. Why does someone want to kill her? Eric is a scientist. Recently, she had a disastrous H1N1 trial, so she has been trying lie low since then. Could this have something to do with that?
See what I mean by “grabbed my attention?” I love Gregg’s writing style, and I really love his shorter chapters. They have a sneaky way of making me read just one more chapter. Before I know it, it’s midnight and I have finished a lot more then just one more chapter.
Bloodborne blew me away. I loved it. I read most of it with my mouth wide open. 4 1/2 stars out of 5. Excellent job, Gregg!

First Things First
I am a big fan of Sadie Hoffmiller. I think it’s because she is so many things I am not and I get to experience the story through someone very different than myself.
Sadie is a widow; I’m celebrating 15 years with my hubby next month. Sadie is a fifty-something retired school teacher with two grown children in college; I am a stay-at-home mom with four kids ranging in ages from 13 to 2.5 years old. Sadie loves to cook and bake; I love to eat things other people have cooked and baked. Her curiosity gets her into some serious scrapes; I would be to nervous to do anything and just let the police handle it. She loves food; I love food. Wait…
Speaking of food, the Blueberry Muffin Tops on page 11 are absolutely delicious. They make me so HAPPY. Light, sweet, lemon-blueberry goodness…*ahem*…
Blackberry Crumble is the fifth book in the Sadie Hoffmiller Mystery series. This story is different in that Sadie is sought out by another character, May, to look into her father’s death. May feels that her father was murdered, though his death was ruled as a heart attack. Sadie is undecided about helping May, especially after Jane, the easy-to-despise reporter publishes a sensationalized article about Sadie in the Denver Post.
Sadie finds herself being shunned by those who know her because of the lies printed about her in the article. Even her church “friends” are being uncharitable, condemning Sadie without asking her side. Ultimately, Sadie decides to get away from all the gossip, takes the case and heads up to Portland.
My Thoughts
Blackberry Crumble was well-written, descriptive and full of red herrings. I honestly didn’t know who would end up being the bad guy and I was surprised by the end. The overall pace felt a little slower than the others but there was still plenty of suspense and action. There was a bit of humor along with a higher level of emotions like grief, guilt, regret, resentment, and family contention.
I’ve already mentioned the Blueberry Muffin Tops, but did you know there was such a thing as Bacon Ice Cream? At first I wrinkled my nose but looking at the recipe it actually sounds really good. My husband would love it.
There was also a certain amount of resolution with Pete that I’ve been waiting to see for a couple of books. While Lemon Tart and Devil’s Food Cake are my favorites in the series, there is something to be appreciated in each of the books. I feel that Blackberry Crumble is where action and consequence come full circle for Sadie and I’m very interested to see where Josi takes the series from here.
What’s Next?
Luckily, the wait for the next book in the series is almost over. Pumpkin Roll is due to be released September 7, 2011. I can’t wait. Not only does the cover make me hungry, it actually makes me look forward to fall. (Summer took so long to get here that I’ve been intentionally avoiding anything that even hints that winter is coming again.)

In BLOODBORNE, a sociopathic genius has developed a deadly virus that he weaponizes using mosquitoes as the delivery mechanism. Erin Cross figures this out and is called on to stop her former colleague’s experiments on the partially populated island of Ni’ihau in the Hawaiian chain. At the same time, she is running from assassins and trying to help the man she was praying would help her. It has lots of cool science and medical intrigue, but I kept it on a basic level so readers who get bored over too much detail will still get a thrill out of the story.
There are some very creepy elements to the story and some twists that will totally catch you off guard—and may even keep you up at night. The novel starts out in Lehi, UT, goes to Cedar City and the Dixie National forest, and ends up on Ni’ihau in Hawaii. As per usual, I’ve tried to keep all the facts in the novel accurate, with only slight embellishment to heighten intensity. I guarantee my readers will like this new novel, and I hope first-time readers will become instant Gregg Luke fans.

What he does with it and how it all turns out will chill your blood.

BLOODBORNE
CHAPTER 1
Erin Cross’s phone plinged and vibrated, indicating the receipt of a text message. The incoming number was a string of zeros; no name was attached. She pressed VIEW.
You are about to die.
She palmed her phone and glanced around. Giamboli’s sandwich deli looked like it usually did at this hour: Estelle Giamboli, an old Italian woman seemingly fresh off the boat, stood at the cash register near the entrance, chatting with whoever would give her an ear; a young man and woman, both in company aprons with their names embroidered as Sam and KrisAn, assembled sandwich orders behind a half-wall divider. The people she didn’t recognize were the other patrons: an older couple sitting at a table across from the register, a quintet of high school-aged girls clucking and squealing around a table near the back, and a dark-haired man sitting alone two booths down from Erin’s small table. The man looked to be in his early forties. He was reading from a notebook and was smiling. He was kinda cute, but probably full of himself. Most of the good-looking ones were. A corner of sandwich and an unmolested pickle were all that remained on his plate. His cell phone sat next to his crumpled napkin.
Erin pressed some apps on her phone to access the caller info.
INORMATION UNLISTED.
She toggled to CALL SENDER.
NUMBER OUT OF SERVICE.
Out of service? Then how could they send a text? Figuring it was simply a glitch in her phone service or just a wrong number, Erin closed her phone and took another bite of her turkey and avocado croissant. Her phone plinged and vibrated again.
Say goodbye, Dr. Cross.
She frowned at the message for a time before realizing she was holding her breath. Perhaps whoever knew her name and cell number was playing a joke—albeit a sick one. Looking up, she noticed the man in the booth was now pressing keys on his cell phone. Was he the one sending her the messages? She didn’t recognize him—
Pling-buzz. You’re dead in 60 seconds.
This was ridiculous. Not wanting to prolong this stupidity—but unable to completely ignore it—she focused on each patron in the deli. None of them looked like a would-be killer or a sick practical joker; at least not the kind you always saw in the movies.
Just then the man in the booth looked up with a serious expression. He glanced at Erin, then at the high school girls across from him, then back at his phone.
It was him—it had to be. Erin pushed away from the table marched over to the man. “I don’t know who you are, but I don’t appreciate your sick jokes,” she snapped.
The man flinched. “Excuse me?”
“Don’t play ignorant. The texting? I saw you do it!”
Taking a hesitant look around, the man appeared sincerely confused. “Is texting not allowed in here?”
“Don’t get smart, jerk face.” Erin tapped her phone. “Text me again and I’ll call the police.”
The man slid from the booth and held out his phone. “Look, I didn’t text you, I promise. I’ll show you my last transmission. See? From me, Sean Flannery, to Britt Flannery, my daughter. Unless your name is also Britt Flan—”
A loud crash stopped him mid-sentence. A man wearing a black ski mask and black clothing had burst through the glass front door, causing it to crack. In his gloved hand was a small metallic box with a short tube sticking out the front, a long, narrow box jutting from the bottom of the grip, and a trigger. The man quickly scanned the deli then raised the box, pointed it at the staff behind the counter, and pulled the trigger. The loud metallic buzzing of machine gun fire fractured the air. Estelle Giamboli screamed and fell. The younger employees dove for cover.
The high school girls screeched and fled to an empty booth.
Sean grabbed Erin and shoved her into the booth. “Stay down,” he ordered.
Still in a fit of anger, Erin hated being told what to do. In spite of the danger, she sat up and watched Sean grab a chair and dash toward the gunman. Still firing at the employees behind the counter, the gunman saw Sean too late. One leg of the chair slammed into his face while another one struck his ribs. The momentum of the assault knocked both men to the floor. The machine gun clattered just out of reach.
As Sean scrambled for the gun, the masked assailant quickly regained his footing and vaulted over the counter.
“Stand up slowly where I can see you!” Sean yelled at the now gun-less man, pointing the weapon in his direction. “You, call 911!” he shouted at Erin.
The masked man slowly rose and faced Sean. The assailant now gripped a large butcher knife in one fist.
“Drop the knife,” Sean ordered.
The gunman pulled off his mask. Erin saw only his profile: Light complexion, cropped, dark hair, early thirties. In a steady, monotone voice, Erin heard him say, “Pro novus ordo seclorum.” He then raised the knife and pointed it at the base of his throat.
“I said drop it!” Sean growled.
An eerie smile spread across the gunman’s face. “It has begun,” he said calmly. And with that, he quickly plunged the blade into his neck, gurgled for breath, then fell to the floor.
The intensity of the whole event finally slammed into Erin, and her adrenaline-charged anger evaporated. Her entire body began to tremble as her mind whirled. Exiting the booth, she dropped her phone.
“Did you get through?” Sean barked.
Erin stared numbly at her phone on the floor, trying to remember if she had made the call. She could not focus her thoughts, could not rein in her emotions. The room began to swim and she felt her knees weaken.
“Did you call 911?” Sean shouted brusquely.
She stared at him but could not speak.
One of the high school girls stepped from her booth and held up her cell phone. “I did. Police are on the way.” The young woman’s voice was staccato, shaky—exactly the way Erin felt.
Sean nodded, then moved behind the counter.
In spite of her determination to be stoic, Erin’s knees faltered. Losing the last vestiges of willpower, she collapsed back into the booth and forced herself not to cry.

At an early age, Stephanie discovered the joy of the written word. As the oldest of six children, she had many opportunities to practise her storytelling skills on her siblings. She filled notebooks with poetry, and wrote plays for her brothers, sisters, and neighborhood friends. But her biggest dream was to be a novelist.
She and her husband Rick have a combined family of six children. She still stays involved with the theatre by serving on her community’s cultural arts board, and she supports literacy by serving on the public library board. She has always used books to escape the pressures of life, explore far-away places, and learn new things. When she isn’t writing she loves to spend time with her family, sew, embroider and read. Stephanie and her family reside in Alberta, Canada.
Double Deceit is Stephanie’s second published novel.
LDSWBR: If you had an entire day to read (on the beach, at the lake, by the pool, etc.), what book(s) or genre would you reach for first?
STEPHANIE: I would reach for a mystery/suspense with a good helping of romance.
LDSWBR: What book(s) do you look forward to reading the most this summer?
STEPHANIE: My pile of books to be read is so large I want to stack them up and see if the books actually reach the ceiling. The first books on my list are Blackberry Crumble by Josi Kilpack, I Don’t Want to Kill You by Dan Wells, and The Pharoah’s Daughter by N.C. Allen.
LDSWBR: What is your favorite outdoor cooking recipe? (Can be grill, campfire, Dutch oven, etc.)
STEPHANIE: I don’t do much outdoor cooking other than hamburgers on the grill or s’mores over the campfire. One of my family’s favorite cool treats are smoothies. Here are two of our favorites.
Watermelon Smoothie
1 cup yogurt (we like vanilla or strawberry)
2 cups strawberries
3 cups watermelon
2 packages stevia powder
Blend in blender until smooth. If you want it colder or thicker, you can add ice, but we like the fruit to be undiluted.
Nectarine-Blueberry Smoothie
1 cup plain yogurt (or vanilla)
1/2 cup coconut milk
1-2 mangos
1 cup blueberries (fresh or frozen)
Blend until smooth. I play with the amount of fruit depending on how many people I am serving. The blueberries and mangos end up being a funny color, but the flavor is divine.

I’m a 63 year old mother of three and grandmother of two who writes, and writes and writes. I have always loved living in alternative realities, starting when I was growing up in a very dysfunctional home. Now I use my writing as an excuse to live my dreams. Just returned from Florence where I spent 3 glorious weeks retreating and writing and taking that wonderful city into my bones. My book is called The Only Way To Paradise. Plotted my next Alex and Briggie book in Florence as well. That will be coming out in the fall. As with the other 5 in the series, it will be a genealogical mystery. If you care, am a graduate of Stanford (BA) and George Washington U (MA). Have taught college and held many jobs in finance. The atonement of Jesus Christ is the most important principle in my life.

LDSWBR: If you had an entire day to read (on the beach, at the lake, by the pool, etc.), what book(s) or genre would you reach for first?
GG: That’s hard, because I read romantic suspense, women’s fiction, mysteries, and historical epics, along with non-fiction history. However, right now, I would probably finish reading Emily Giffin’s womens’ fiction Heart of the Matter.
LDSWBR: What book(s) do you look forward to reading the most this summer?
GG:The Rise and the Fall of the House of Medici and the biography of Lorenzo il Magnifico (the patron of the Renaissance). These are research essentials for my next Crazy Ladies’ book and my Alex and Briggie book.
LDSWBR: How would you describe the perfect summer day?
GG: The perfect summer day would be swimming in the Mediterranean off the Greek Island of Corfu with my grandsons and the entire rest of my family (husband, daughter and son-in-law, and two sons, hopefully married by then, and maybe more grandchildren?) The water off Corfu is turquoise and so clear you can see the sand beneath. It is also warm!
