Book Description:

After a twenty-year absence, Rikki Crockett has come home
to Utah, to the same house where she grew up. When she left, she was
young, hurt, and angry, abandoned by her parents and her best friend. She’
d vowed never to return, but when the worst happens, home is the only
place she might still find a future for her two children, a rebellious
teenage girl, and a sweet little boy with a learning disability. To do
that, she must turn to her former best friend, Dante Rushton, and hope
that he can be her hero one final time. Before I Say Good-Bye is a
tender story about choices, about family, and about a woman who makes
peace with her past and discovers the last and greatest hope of all.
My Review:

This book was simply an amazing and very moving read. It is so emotionally packed, you will be in tears the last few chapters of the book. I love Rachel’s writing, especially how she brings her characters to life. I always get so involved in the story and the characters, I forget that they are not real. The story is told from four different character’s viewpoints, Rikki, Dante(her old boyfriend), Dante’s wife, Becca, and Rikki’s daughter Kyle. They all have such unique voices. This aspect shows the strength in Rachel Nunes writing. She truly knows how to write memorable character’s that draw out the emotions in the reader.

This is a powerful story of what true love is all about. I am not talking about romantic love, but that love you show to others when you serve and care for them.

This is a book that has LDS characters, but you do not need to be LDS to read this book. If you are a Christian that believes in second chances, then you will enjoy reading Before I Say Good-Bye. Without giving anything away anything, and ruining the story for the rest of you, just know, this is a book about a woman who is ill, a rebellious teen girl with a dream, a busy Bishop who hasn’t had the time to see all of his blessings, and his wife who has always given and never followed any of her dreams. All together they end up healing one another, while finding their true selves.

I enjoyed this five star book so much, I will be purchasing it. The messages found in this book will make you hug your loved ones more often, and not take for granted the many blessings surrounding you daily. Beautiful job Rachel Nunes, beautiful job.

About the Author:

Rachel Ann Nunes learned to read when she was four, beginning a lifetime fascination with the written word. She avidly devoured books then and still reads everything she can lay hands on, from children’s stories to science articles. She began writing in the seventh grade and is now the author of twenty-nine published books, including the popular Ariana series and the picture book Daughter of a King. Her most recent novels are Tell Me No Lies and Before I say Goodbye.

Rachel and her husband, TJ, are the parents of three boys and four girls. Rachel loves camping with her family, traveling and meeting new people, and, of course, writing. As a stay-at-home mother of seven, it isn’t easy to find time to write, but she will trade washing dishes or weeding the garden for an hour at the computer any day! Her only rule about writing
is to never eat chocolate at the computer. “Since I love chocolate and
writing,” she jokes, “my family might never see me again.” Rachel writes
Monday through Friday in a home office, often with a child on her lap.
She takes frequent breaks from writing to build Lego towers, practice
reading, or go swimming with the kids.

LDSWBR: If you had an entire day to read (on the beach, at the lake, by the pool, etc.), what book(s) or genre would you reach for first?

RACHEL: Urban fantasy. For those of you who don’t know what that is, it’s basically contemporary novels where there is some sort of supernatural element in the story. It’s hard to find good ones that don’t have a lot of questionable junk, but there are a few good series available. I wish there were more. Sometimes I’ll read YA stories in the genre for this very reason, but I avoid anything that features kids in high school. Been there, done that, and it doesn’t interest me. I also enjoy regular women’s fiction and suspense.

LDSWBR: What book(s) do you look forward to reading the most this summer?

RACHEL: I am saving the fifth in the Kate Daniels series to read on my summer camping vacation. I’ve also been trying a few new authors in that same genre.

LDSWBR: What is your favorite outdoor cooking recipe? (Can be grill, campfire, Dutch oven, etc.)

RACHEL: My husband does all the outdoor cooking, and I like it that way. Even if I knew how to do any of it, I’d pretend I didn’t!

LDSWBR: How would you describe the perfect summer day?

RACHEL: For me the perfect summer day would be one where I get to sleep until eight or nine before working for a few hours on my current manuscript. None of the kids would interrupt me with complaints, fighting, or to solve their problems. They would all do their chores before they come ask if they can play video games. After a nice lunch, we’d all go to the pool for a little fun and exercise. Then I’d read a bit of a book until my seven-year-old (who never wants to quit) is ready to get out of the pool. We’d go in and shower. By that time my husband would be off work and would stop and get some chicken or something for dinner. After dinner, we’d all go out in the backyard and play a little soccer before roasting marshmallows for s’mores over our outdoor fire pit (which after two years would finally be completed). All the kids would be there, even the one who doesn’t live at home anymore. Then we’d go in and send the kids to their rooms to read (most likely) or sleep or whatever while my husband and I go for a walk or watch a little TV.

Wow, what a fantasy! In actuality, there might be a lot of days where some of this happens—for instance, we swim almost every day in the summer—but all these things in one day. Ha! We really might finish the fire pit soon, though . . .

LDSWBR: Thank you, Rachel. Have a great summer!

Shades of Gray by Rachel Ann Nunes (Shadow Mountain; May 2011) is available for purchase from Amazon.

Fire pits are really popular right now. Do you have a fire pit in your back yard? If not, do you have plans to build or buy one?

LDSWBR: Rachel, what favorite holiday traditions do you and your family participate in each year? Will you be starting any new traditions this year?

RACHEL: On Christmas Eve we have a bubblegum blowing contest, which I always win (so far!). Then we turn out the electric lights, light every available candle in the house, and have a special dinner (with turkey and codfish dishes). The kids love the candles! Then we sing Christmas songs and talk about the meaning of Christmas, open our new Christmas pajamas and one present from a sibling. Then we change into our bathing suits and head for the hot tub, where we sing more songs at the top of our lungs so our neighbors can share the joy. There are other things we do, including sledding, gingerbread houses, treat-making, but we have the most fun on Christmas Eve.

LDSWBR: What books are on your Christmas wish list?

RACHEL: My husband got me a Kindle for Christmas, which I opened early so I could download a bunch of urban fantasy novels, which is a current phase I’m going through. Don’t remember the titles (which are many and varied), but I read the first chapters, and if I’m hooked, I read it. The great thing about the Kindle is that I can buy and read books anywhere–in the car, at the tire shop, in the mall…

LDSWBR: What books have you purchased/will you purchase for loved one this Christmas? (Don’t spoil any surprises!)

RACHEL: My children want books more than anything else (yay!), and my husband loves to read so I bought him some books too. Some of these are:

The Gathering Storm (Wheel of Time) by Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson
Eyes Like Stars: Theatre Illuminata, Act I by Lisa Mantchev

During the “Recent Reads” section of LDSWBR Podcast Episode 36, I shared a review of Rachel Ann Nunes‘ latest novel, Saving Madeline, due to be released mid-September. If you don’t currently have plans to visit a book store before the end of September I highly suggest you make some plans and add Saving Madelineto the top of your list. Rachel addresses a tough issue that most people aren’t fully aware of- or at least I wasn’t until reading her book.

Parker has a tough decision to make: continue to allow his daughter, Madeline, to remain with her drug-using mother or do something to protect her from Dakota’s negligence. Parker makes his decision and must face the consequences of his actions, unless proof of Dakota’s drug abuse and negligence can be found. Caitlin McLoughlin has become tired of defending petty criminals she knows are guilty, but the rare opportunities of helping someone who is truly innocent keep her from leaving her job. That, and her obligation to her special-needs sister, Amy. When she considers taking Parker’s case as a favor to a friend, Caitlin quickly learns that while he is technically guilty of the crimes he is accused of, the reasons behind it are valid- if only they could find the evidence they’re looking for. Caitlin begins to love little Madeline, and her feelings for Parker start to grow as well.

Rachel has done an excellent job of writing about difficult choices, troubled circumstances, and situations that blur the line between the black and white of the law. The chemistry between Caitlin and Parker is touching and romantic. Rachel has written believable, endearing characters- not just the hero and heroine, but minor characters as well- who are comfortable and natural within the setting of the story.

Saving Madeline gets 5 stars and a Whitney nomination from me.

Well done, Rachel!
