Book Description:

Three years ago, the small town of Britteridge was rocked by the senseless murder of Gail Ludlum. Now the people most affected by the tragedy have returned to the place where it all began, and the scene is set for the perfect revenge . . .
Megan O’Connor’s life was shattered when she was unwittingly drawn into a kidnapping plot that ultimately led to the murder of an innocent woman. Though the road to redemption has been long, she’s finally found happiness with her recent engagement to a wonderful man, a pillar of the community. But amid the chaos of wedding planning, the return of Gail Ludlum’s son to Britteridge sets in motion a disturbing sequence of events. Soon Megan finds herself the victim of a series of cruel deceptions that indicate one thing: her past mistakes have not been forgiven or forgotten. As the mischief escalates to dangerous levels, it becomes clear that someone is determined to avenge Gail’s death. And he won’t rest until he’s taken a life for a life.

My Review:
Just like every other mystery/suspense book I’ve read by this author, I should realize I can’t just pick up the book, read for awhile and walk away. No, I make this mistake every time. I pick up the book read, then read some more, realize it’s midnight and I have to teach the next day, but I still can’t put the book down, and keep reading until I pass out. It was pure torture to work all day and have to wait until I came home to finish the book.
Played for a Fool is one of those books where you know exactly who is behind all of the crazy things happening to the main character, but you just don’t know how or when the next thing is going to happen. You worry and panic for main character Megan O’ Connor whose life is finally settling down after tragedies that had happened three years before. Just when Megan thinks maybe she can have a normal life with her twin sister in jail for murder and kidnapping, the past has come back to start wrecking havoc in her life by making it look like Megan is as bad as her sister. It’s really frustrating when even Megan’s finance Trevor starts thinking that Megan is behind the strange things happening; after all it was his kid sister that was kidnapped by Megan’s sister and almost killed and Megan was duped into helping with the kidnapping. There is a lot of action and much deception in this novel. Just when you think things are starting to settle down, guess what? It’s time for more crazy action that will keep you strapped to this novel. As I said earlier, be prepared to set aside a day to read this book, because it’s very hard to put down. The interesting characters and the schemes going on all around, will keep this book in your hands and your mind whirling, way after you have read the last page. LDSWBR: What is your favorite Christmas song/hymn? Does it have special meaning to you?

STEPHANIE: I love Christmas music! One of my favorite Christmas songs is the Carol of the Drum (The Little Drummer Boy). This year it occurred to me that the song does have some deep spiritual meaning. I struggle with perfectionism in some ways (though you’d never know it in other aspects of my life). The drummer boy goes to meet the King, and doesn’t think he has a gift fit to give, so he offers the best he has–he plays his drum, and the King is pleased. Isn’t that how it is with us? We’re all struggling in our own ways and don’t really have a gift fit to give the King, but when we offer the best we have, no matter how little it is, He is pleased with our offering.

LDSWBR: Do you get together with friends/family to play board games on Christmas or New Year’s? What games do you like to play? Do you have a favorite game from your childhood?

STEPHANIE: My family does enjoy board games. As a child, I enjoyed Monopoly, but I sure don’t like it now–it takes forever! Clue was fun. A relatively new game I enjoy is Bezzerwizzer–it’s like Trivial Pursuit, only better, because you don’t have to get correct answers in all the categories to win and it lets you focus a bit more on your strengths. Other games our family likes: Ticket to Ride, Bananagrams, Apples to Apples, The Great Dalmuti. I like Quirkle too.

LDSWBR: If you could recommend only one book from those you read this year, what would it be and why?

STEPHANIE: I only get to recommend one?? Well . . . okay, if you insist. How about the Whitney Award Best Novel of the Year: The Rent Collector, by Camron Wright. To take such a miserable and unique setting and create such a beautiful, hopeful story . . . wow.

LDSWBR: I love your insight on The Little Drummer Boy. Thanks, Stephanie!

TheWitnesses

Welcome to New America, where patriots are traitors and religion is a crime. After government agent Daniel Lansbury fakes the executions of three believers on national television, he and the fugitives–Alisa Kent, Ian Roshek, and Ian’s sister, Jill–face the perilous task of outwitting President Amanda Ryce and her power-hungry Council long enough to escape to freedom. While a government reformer is on their side, rigorous new security measures thwart any chance of aid. And Daniel’s estranged father, Marcus, an underground terrorist leader, is hatching plans to sabotage the breakable trust between Daniel and Ian and put himself in power at the head of the nation. As faith and loyalties come under fire, the fugitives struggle to stop Marcus and his zealous terrorists and bring to light the wrongs committed against the citizens of this fragile, fledgling nation.

It has been interesting to see how many people enjoy playing the classic games that are familiar to most of us. However, some have mentioned games that I have never heard of before, like The Great Dalmuti. What games have been mentioned in the Countdown posts that are completely new to you?

Mindy’s Review

WOW!  WOW!  WOW!  The Witnesses by Stephanie Black, grabs you fast at the beginning and doesn’t let you go until you’ve read the last sentence.  Every turn of the page brings more suspense and questions as to who you can trust.  The Witnesses picks up immediately after The Believer ends.  Having just finished The Believer a few days ago, I was very eager to see what happened to Ian, Jill, Daniel and Alisa.  (I feel bad for those who had to wait so long in between books:)  It isn’t all good news and happy endings for the four.  Alisa is really struggling with reversions and is having hallucinations.  Daniel is having troubles of his own, while he and Ian are at each other’s throats.  There are suspicions everywhere and many problems that come up.  Where to place the three believers is first priority, but there really isn’t anywhere safe to put them.  Even for a short time.  I loved the POV changes to different characters, even to some characters I didn’t like.  It really added to the severity and drama of the situations, that our heros were in a lot more trouble than they realize.  It was also a great way to move the story along without having the main characters figure everything out.

5 out of 5 stars.   Stephanie does a brilliant job of ending paragraphs and/or chapters in a way that made me keep reading until the end.  She is so good at what she does.

Shanda’s Review

I’ve been anxious to read The Witnesses, sequel to The Believer, for many years. It did not disappoint. The Believer was Stephanie’s first published novel, and I loved it so much it earned 5 stars and made it onto my taking-with-me-on-a-deserted-island bookshelf. Well, I’ll be adding The Witnesses to that shelf as well.

I was turning page after page, at times wondering how in the world Ian and Jill and Daniel would make it through, who would betray whom, who would live and who would die. I was in suspense to the very end, unsure of how things would turn out as the situation became more and more dire for our heroes. There was an unexpected and fascinating twist that I loved.

I am in awe (though not surprised) at how well-crafted and layered the story is throughout both books, and the way the twist worked into events near the end. While the book had a very satisfying conclusion, I still find myself wondering how things worked out in the long run. I need to sit down with Stephanie and either get her to tell me or convince her to write a follow up because I really want to know. I’m not quite ready to say goodbye to Ian.

I highly recommend both The Believer and The Witnesses. They made me think, kept me reading, and stayed with me for days. Well done, Stephanie. Now get going on that follow up for me. (Please?)

Amazon Summary

There is a place where the threat of foreign terrorism is nonexistent, where there are no arguments about religion, and no battles over politics. Welcome to New America—a place where reading the wrong book can cost you your life!

Ian Roshek finally believes in something. The young history professor has studied a contraband copy of the Book of Mormon—and he knows what it says is true. But now his newfound convictions will be put to the test as he struggles to listen to the still, small voice, while society screams in his ear.

Ian’s sister Jill and her influential boyfriend, Daniel, only see Ian as a man with religious delusions–a man who needs help. And though her facade of brutality hides it, police interrogator Alisa Kent feels a trace of compassion toward this flawed, but courageous man who stays true to his faith–despite the fact that it’s contrary to both logic and public opinion. If only for selfish reasons, she wants to know more. But soon Ian’s choices will ignite a chain of events that he, and those around him, cannot escape.

A taut, must-read thriller, The Believer will cast a lingering shadow and leave you asking what you would give up in order to feel “safe.”

My Review

Words can not describe what a crazy-good author Stephanie Black is.  Her books take you to another place, a place that you are reluctant to return from.  Well, in the case of The Believer, that world was a pretty tough place to be, but you know what I mean.  When we first meet Ian Roshek, he is coming to the aid of a student being wrongly accused of having contraband.  He is taken into custody and tortured (don’t worry, it’s not graphic) by police interrogator Alisa Kent.  After the agonizing time spent in custody, Kent lets him go.  It takes time for Ian to feel safe again.  The only problem is, Ian really was guilty.  He is a believer, and he can’t figure why Kent lets him go.  What happens next sets off a chain of events that will send your mind spinning and keep you reading this awesome book until you turn the last page.

Stephanie is a gifted author.  Her books are so well-written you feel as though you watching a movie instead of reading.  These characters go through a lot.  And by the end, you aren’t sure who to trust.  There is so much going on, and not just for Ian, all the characters.  All their decisions affect each other in some way.  The character I found most intriguing was Daniel.  Without giving much away, he has a VERY though choice to make, and on top of that is given life-changing news that will/can affect so many.  Including, his chance to make himself happy.  Alisa Kent was fascinating too.  Every character was so well-written.  The last sentence of this book brought tears to my eyes.

5 out of 5 stars.  This book made me grateful for freedom of religion.  The sequel to The Believer, The Witnesses, was just released last month.  I will be reviewing The Witnesses next week!

Stephanie is the author of many fast-paced thrillers.  She won the Whitney Award for her books Rearview Mirror, Cold as Ice, Methods of Madness, and Fool me Twice.  I told you she was amazing!

I am giving away a Kindle copy of The Believer on Min Reads and Reviews.  Find it here.

TheWitnessesUpcoming Release: The Witnesses by Stephanie Black

I am so excited about the upcoming release of The Witnesses by Stephanie Black that I want to shout from the rooftops, or at least post about it on the LDSWBR blog, which will probably reach more people and prevent my neighbors from thinking I’m crazier than they already think I am. (About books, that is.)

I have been waiting for this book for SEVEN years, since I had the opportunity to read The Believer back in 2006. In fact, we discussed The Believer in Episode 4 of the LDSWBR Podcast back in May 2006. (Warning: Podcast contains spoilers for The Believer.)

This was recorded in our pre-microphone-and-mixer days, gathered around my old iMac. I listened to it again for the first time since editing it, and in the intro I announce the contest Rob Wells was hosting for the release of The Counterfeit. Wow, I can’t believe how quickly time flies.

TheBeliever(Note: We never did post our Cheesy, aka “Funeral” Potato Recipes. Ah, well.)

(Note #2: About 20 minutes into the podcast I say something that made me laugh out loud: “One of the things I like is that the computers are like the size of a Palm Pilot. Hey, that would be nice! Maybe we’re on our way there.” If I had been listening to it on my iPhone I would have laughed even harder at Ignorant Me of 2006.)

Anyway, though The Witnesses is a follow up to The Believer, Stephanie made sure you don’t need to have read The Believer. I really enjoyed The Believer though, and if you can manage it, I encourage you to read it first simply because it is a great book.

If you are considering reading The Believer, Stephanie warns not to read the back cover blurb of The Witnesses because of spoilers. You can read more on Stephanie’s blog (see her post entitled The Witnesses).

While I’m not ready for summer to be over, at least I have The Witnesses to look forward to, as well as a reread of The Believer. It’s been so long since I read it, it will feel like the first time, and I’m excited to experience it all again.

The Believer is available on Kindle and DB Bookshelf. You can also preorder the paperback from Deseret Book.

The Witnesses will be released October 1, 2013. You can preorder it in paperback or audio CD from Amazon.

***If you can’t wait that long to read more Stephanie Black, check out her novella “Eye for an Eye” in A Timeless Romance Anthology: Autumn Collection.***

LDSWBR: Do you top your Christmas tree with a star, angel, or something else? Does it have special meaning to you?

STEPHANIE: This year, we have a wire star there that used to be an ornament. As far as special meaning, the special meaning is “we should look for a nice tree-topper at the after-Christmas sales.”

LDSWBR: What is your favorite Christmas movie? Why is it your favorite?

STEPHANIE: The Muppet Christmas Carol. It’s funny, fun, festive, touching, and has great music.

LDSWBR: What Christmas gift have you been most excited to give?

STEPHANIE: I can’t think of a specific gift that tops the list, but here’s one that I think is awesome :) A few years ago I made fleece blankets for all the kids. I am NOT good at sewing, but these fleece blankets were something I could do that turned out great. They don’t involve any actual sewing–just two layers of fleece with the edges cut into strips and tied together. Anything I make out of fabric is going to turn out crooked or uneven in some way, but with these blankets, it doesn’t matter–when it’s wrapped around you, you don’t notice the flaws. I tried to choose fabric each child would like, and it was fun to have a handmade blanket for each child on Christmas morning.

LDSWBR: Thank you, Stephanie!

Gifted musician Catherine Clayton was born into a life of wealth and privilege. Following the death of her father, she makes a bold decision she hopes would make him proud: she’s using the family money to establish a music school and offer free lessons to the underprivileged. A providential suggestion from an old college friend leads Catherine to select Riley, New York, as the perfect location for her new school. Hit hard by the economic downturn, Riley personifies economic hardship: peeling paint, overgrown landscapes, and damaged buildings. But the damage runs much deeper than Catherine first realizes. Two years ago, Riley was rocked by weeks of vandalism followed by the brutal murder of beautiful elementary school secretary Olivia Perry. Everyone in town loved Olivia but especially the two men with whom she was caught in a love triangle. Though the murder remains unsolved, Catherine receives ominous warnings that one of these men, Adam Becket, is responsible for the girl’s death. Unimpressed by the lack of evidence against him, Catherine is drawn to the shy but endearing Adam. Could he really have been involved in Olivia’s murder? Just as Catherine is settling in and getting to know Adam, a vandal strikes again, and it’s eerily reminiscent of the events surrounding Olivia’s murder. The death threats splashed on the walls prove that the killer is back and this time, it’s Catherine who wonders if she’s come to the wrong place at the wrong time.

Do you shop the after Christmas sales? Ever find any great deals?
